But ive agreed to buy this dune buggy. Supposedly it was built way back when and runs and drives still. Even comes with a old dune riders plaque. Looks like a lot of good parts but i think it will stay a dune buggy for a while. But i do have a model a frame frontend and sport coupe body. Enjoy these shitty pics till i go get it.

Look on the bright side,if you didn't pay too much for it at least you have a running flatty with drive train. Build around that...............

  6. early example of what we in the Sand Dunes called "Water Pumpers", since we were VW powered guys. You would see these at Glamis and Pismo all the time in the early days of Duneing. Cool find

When I was a kid in the 50's we used to come to Miami every Summer for a vacation. I remember seeing some buggies that used to run up and down the beach like the one you pictured. They usually had bigger back tires with agressive tread, but in essence were the same as yours.

Neat! There are excellent article on the Ford based period of dune running in R&C, Car Craft, and HRM circa 1953-55...if yours is in there it would be easy to spot with the distinctive use of '37 engine and early heads backwards...

we used to build crap like that all the time and run through the deserts in eastern WA - chasing jackrabbits and harassing other wildlife. Simple frame and any V8 or big six was good enough - we like automatics, as they were easier to get out of sand pits than stick shifts.

There was an article in some magazine years ago showing a bunch of those running at Pismo Beach in the 50's or early 60's. Some of them had some hell for stout engines in them.

Interesting that they switched the heads from side to side to get the outlets in the rear, looks like a good buy, lots of flathead parts.

I remember those early dune buggies north of Lauderdale in the '60's -licensed and steet legal too! The ones I saw had rims that were really wide for the tires. They were so wide that it was amazing that they held a bead. I guess they were used for better 'floatation' on deep sand.....

Florida had its own variant, also generally Model A based. Swamp buggies, like the one shown but with absolutely gigantic tires, bigger even than beach buggies.

Supposedly the heads are turned around for better cooling. But it should have the center port heads.

They are running water pumps on the front of the block, so the "in head" pumps are no longer necessary, so they turned the heads backwards, to get full water flow front to back I guess.

Looks like a pruned '34 steering box & pitman arm, too...Late front end, but what has it got for transmission?

Looks like that Cabriolet will be running soon! Nice score, 'Kid. Nothin' wrong with ya!

Now that I think about it, some of the ones I saw had dually rear tires on the back. They must have made some kind of adapter to bolt two wheels per side.
