Top chops are the trend at the moment. But shoes ,to my mind ,look like crap with a chop, like a big fat blob with a pot lid on top.
But in Saying that ,I have always loved this coupe of Milo Broz's.
I even had a big collection of those 50's and 60's books and mags showing how to section in the hope i'd one day buy a coupe and section it to look something like Milo's .

seriously??? i think they look stupid with the stock roof. i'm not advocating choppin the damn thing 2 feet or anything but those tops are just too big and bulbous. they NEED a slight chop... couple a stock height roof with a section and it REALY starts to look funny... in my opinion.

I have to agree with kustombuilder on this one, but this would be a pretty damn boring hobby if we all like the same shit. Don't really like the looks of this car but definetly respect the craftsmanship it took to build it.

sectioned shoeboxes look like arse exactly because they are NOT chopped! the ratio of roof height to body height is totally screwed on that car.
Did people not actually stand back and look at the profile at some point while working on it??
Actually i just looked at it again, and all the section really achieves is makes the roof look like some kind of freaky space bubble on top of a normal shoebox!

sections only work in moderation and on a few bodies, not 49 -51s

    hows that for an opinion??:)

sure you can chop too much, but i've only seen a couple sectioned cars that i liked. most look dumb, including this one. i cant even imagine how much work that is, but aren't customs supposed to look *better*?..

    each to their own..

I couldn't disagree more. I love the choped 49-51 fords. Now the sedans look a lot beter choped than the business coupes do. The coupes look great stock or even sectioned. I guess it depends on the model of car you are starting out with.

My opinion is that when you section a Shoe Box, it needs a chop even worse! Those big balloon tops need a few inches taken out, and the Milo car needs even more because of the section. That car has always looks out of proportion to me. But, you know what they say about opinions!

There is a chopped/ sectioned shoebox at my buddy David's shop. It's on airbags. When it's layed out it looks kinda neat, but once it's at ride height it looks funny... odd. Also - when you sit in it you look like you are in a bodydropped minitruck.

Chop, Yes - Section - No.

  14. here's the X-51 beet. also, duns valley custom built box. i don't think it's a negative post as much as his opinion. we're allowed to have those all on our own. but, not going to be a popular one for sure.

You are all a little harsh on the sectioned Ford, aren't you? I have seen worse proportioned cars and that would include some chopped cars that look like they have been stepped on.

The proportions of this car is similar to the east coast style channelled early 1930's Fords and there is a following for those.

I would have said that it is the worst looking car I have ever seen but I think the band wagon is full. :)

There is a sectioned shoebox or two in our area. At one of the car gatherings it was parked next to a couple mid-fifties studebakers. It was interesting to see the similarities between the sectioned Ford and the stock Studebakers. I have felt that Studebaker led the way on styling.

X-51 is a home built car, done from 57-59, was a daily driver. Hung out at the drive inns and rolled the streets. Love it or hate it its a great custom!......OLDBEET

The X-51 is one of my favorites but I want a non-chopped 49-50 Merc. so I'm completely out of step.

Since I picked up my first car magazine in 1957 every shoebox coupe I have seen craved a chop. The attached pics of Marty Well's is the best example of correct chop that I have ever seen.

    Attached Files:

  22. An unchopped and sectioned Shoebox looks very European, like something Ghia would have produced.

I do like a chop and a mild section together...

To each his own I guess.

I partially agree and disagree.. There seems to be a million chopped shoeboxes out there and 90 percent I see I can't stand. The chops are horrible and the rear window always comes out wrong and flat looking.

Now the Marty Well's car is perfect.. I'd love to do that to my '49, but I don't have the skill and afraid it would just end up like the 90% that I can't stand.

Coupes don't need a chop IMO, the trunk ends up looking really long. Sedans could use a chop, but only a good one.

I kind of like the sectioned one posted, but the rear wheel well looks unfinished and cheap.. like it was cut out for tire clearance. It looks especially bad where the tailight bump thing gets near the wheel well.

Yes! Finally see a chop where they open the windshield opening a bit on top to match the side profile. Kickass. I hate seeing chopped Fords and altho the side windows arent that small, the windshield is like 4" tall. Looks wierd. Altho I think the back is a little bulbous and they could have prolly taken 1" out more @ the c pillars or decrowned it a bit and still not lost the basic pitch of the rear window.

Totally agree. When I chopped my sedan I wanted radical, and soon after it was done I didnt like it. It was waaay too chopped in the rear, and the front for that matter. Fords are hard to chop and get it right.

Prolly my favorite chop hands down on a sedan, at this point, is prolly Bad Bobs. Nice long ass quarter windows with beautiful shape and curve @ the c pillar, nice pitch of the rear window, really just an unbeatable car.

Sometimes sectioned cars should be renamed sucktioned, but the above are nice, except for Bill Hine's bat, I've never really dug that car.

I think Revhead nailed it... but I do like the sectioned/no chop look if it's done well... the one that started this thread is... yes it it very european looking, but that's what I like about it...

I've always been a fan of unchopped /sectioned ford coupes of this era. I think it is a good look. I saw the X-51 at Pleasanton this summer, it's still looking good, I think it has been redone with a more modern drivetrain and MII front.

as for chopped shoeboxes... I think most people these days are chopping cars way too much. 6" chop. bags. laying frame. bias ply wide whites. satin black... it's a look that is overdone.
