Well it started out as a good plan...go to my parents house for thanksgiving[they live about 200 miles away]and drive my 1920 willys roadster pick-up I just traded for 2 weeks ago,I'd take my 9yr. old son-it'd be an adventure. The willys has no top, powered by an inline 6 chevy,40 ford running gear,brakes,etc..The 5 day forcast said sunny and 50deg on sunday, only problem is that was wrong, sat and sun was solid rain with a high of 38.I borrowed my moms new car to get him back in time for school today.Drove back today to swap cars and drive the willys home.It took 7 hrs to go 200 miles,it either snowed sleeted or rained the whole way back.My schedule only allowed for today to go get it...it was awsome, had a blast, the looks and stares from people on the road had me laughing out loud, kinda looked like John Candy and Steve Martin in Planes Trains and Automobiles when they were driving that k-car convertible,am I ******** or retarded?
just pop Planes Trains and Automobles in your DVD player and repalce the burned up k-car with a 1920 willys pick-up and you'll get the picture
I dig that roadster, man. Just like I'd build one. That also sounds like a helluva time though. I thought riding my bicycle at night was cold, but what do I know, I'm a California guy..
As a ******** roadster owner you live by the adage "It's Roadster Weather". That's why we own and drive them. No top and no fenders equals a real roadster fanatic. Let them all wish they were in the seat next to you instead of riding in a boring closed in late model. Keep on keepin' on. The FOGGER
My personal minimum temperature for my roadster is 15 F. It was moderately cool, as I recall. The other citizens out on the highway look at you funny in the rain, but are entirely flummoxed when you are jamming through a snowstorm. Haven't done that in a long time; need to get out more....
Yes. I once did a brake job in the driveway in a sleetstorm. Less people stare at you that way. On the bright side, you shouldn't have to worry about having to rinse the road salt off it now that it's home, that's the only thing that would slow me down in the winter up here.
Nice, THe only problem I get when I'm out in the rain with my roadster is trying to keep from getting sprayed by the front tires when I'm turning. it makes it easy to do burnouts though.
Man you are crazy!! Yesterday was miserable! I've seen that truck at the Lanier speeday. Its cool. I hung around but didn't get to meet ya. Is there any rear suspension? It sort of looked hard mounted. I had no idea you drove it all over. That's great. Getting any bites off craigs list???
Yea,it bid up to $6600 I think, the reserve was $8500,so it didnt sell,I'm a trader, wheeler dealer, never really keep one car too long, who knows, maybe the story off this trip will add will add another $10 or so to the value of it ...any takers??
You'll forget a hundred trips you make on sunny days, but you'll remember this one til the day you die
Good story, neat car but the most important thing you didn't mention,,,,did your boy like it as much as you did,and when you ask him about it does his grin begin.?
heres a photo of his grin,on the roadside when I stopped to check the oil,the other pic is at the parts store. At one point he asked"why is everybody staring at us?Why do people keep taking pictures of us with their camera phones?"and that was in the good weather on the way up.Those goofy goggles he wore cracked me up.
Man, That is quite the story of your two trips. I am sure you and your son will remember it for quite a while ! 41 Dave
If I ended up driving that roadster 200 miles in the snow and cold I would consider myself to be quite an idiot. I hate the cold, and if I am out in it I am not having a good time.. even in a cool roadster pickup. I'm a cold weather wimp and not ashamed to admit it.
...and i thought i was cool drivin my 51 around up here last weekend with a window busted out n a hole in the floor, im just a puss!
Exactly. I"ve done a lot of trips on the bike and the ones I talk about are the ones where I had some weather or break down to deal with. If everything goes smooth then there isn't really a story to tell, and in the end it's all about the stories.
