I was just out in my shop grabbing a magazine and something caught the corner of my eye... It turned out to be a baseball sized dent on the driver's side rear fender of my '38. I have no idea how it got there... And of course, the paint chipped off as well... The last time I drove it was Sunday. I went to Target to pick some stuff up for the wife. Someone must have hit me in the parking lot while I was inside. Sick. I've got to make friends with a body guy in KC now. I don't know any of them...
That ****s, big time. Hope you find a painter that can blend it so you can't tell, ****. I can't believe someome would do that, probably target fixation, so intent on looking at your car they couldn't see they were going to hit it. sorry.
I hate to say it, but you can't have anything "nice" and leave it unattended, where the "public" can get to it. I've been with friends in beautiful restored cars or hot rods, and they park WAY far away from everyone else in a parking lot and when we came back, some jerk was parked right next to the car. I have had friends park the same way only to come back and find their car "keyed". Apparently some dirtbag decided that if someone had a nice custom car and they didn't, or couldn't afford one, that they would send the owner their own sick distorted "message".
My stomach goes to **** when I run across this .... It's like my first day at school and I'm ready to puke on somebody. Sorry to hear it. I guess thats what we have to tolerate when we drive em. Can you imagine what it would be like to have one totaled?
you may be able to have one of those paintless dent dudes pull it those guys are magic they did a masaratti for a freind cant even see where it was
I'm just bummed. And sad... This is the last thing I needed right now. I've been driving the car every day lately just as a form of therapy and now this... It's all I can think about and I'm sure I won't be able to drive without thinking about it. I don't care who did it. I don't care how it happened. I just want to fix it... or get it fixed by someone that has the same p***ion for it that I do...
That ****s. You probably parked it way the **** away from everyone else too, and still someone hit it with a shopping cart, maybe even on purpose... If I remember right, you said it had original paint.... If so, it's nitrocellulose, and acrylic lacquer ("base coat" is still lacquer!) will lift the nitro right off the steel so you need to strip it and start cean metal, or find some nitro... Damn, That ****s.
Sorry to hear this has happened. I know what it feels like to have your hot rod damaged. I can recommend TWO awesome body/paint guys that would consider it their own car while doing the work. One here in Detroit and one outside of Nashville. Feel like taking a road trip??
Man that sux, your right, the best thing is to get the ****er fixed, and keep driving it! I saw a fella in his fully fendered 32 (steel) get a 'bump' at a show recently by some other fella (in a rod) going the other way, who wasn't so 'spaciously aware'.... It was a narrow road, one way at that! The fella in the 32 warned the other guy as he was there watching!! I'm suprised that he didn't thump him! Outback
At least you didn't do it your self doing something stupid like I did!!! I was working on something next to my car and I steppd back to look at it and it flipped over and peppered the top of my fender. Now that'll make ya sick.
That really ****s, with the talent that's out there I'm sure it will be fix up right.. Some folks just don't love cars as we all do here. Damm shame!
i hate that ****. some **** nut does that **** & just leaves. i know that "sick" feeling too. i its not a car but i have promised Levi Cl***ic this clock since last sept & everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, from the paint & clear lifting a few times to something falling on it & scratching it all up to the damn painters tape sticking to it along w/the wife & i both being in the hospital. there's always a brite side to things if ya think about it, at least it was "just" a dent & not the whole fender or car & it can be fixed......joe ooo yea Ryan if ya catch them....KILL'em .............
I can suggest a guy if you are interested. he's kind of in the hood but he does real good work. I went to school with a guy that works there and every time I'm in there i'm impressed. Nate Kenny's Body Shop (913) 371-6125 1516 N 13th St Kansas City, KS
Uuggh. Sorry to hear it man. I agree, you can't have NUTHIN' nice out in public.... Here's a little story that might cheer you up: I went to the Grand Rod Run the weekend before last. Before I went, I "waxed" the Fairlane with some old, black, used motor oil I had laying around. It makes it shine a little and the only drawback is, in the hot sun, it smells like someone busted a transmission. I laughed to myself all day as little kids rubbed up against it and touched it all over. There were a million fingerprints all over it at the end of the day. It just warms my heart a little to know that some mom probably said to her kid that night, "WHERE the hell did you get OIL all over your shirt from!?" .....from touchin' my hoopty, thats where. Am I mean, NOPE...Kids should learn NOT to **** with someone elses property. That goes for touching too. It might help them not to RAM someone's car later in life when they go down to the local Target. It ****s what happened to your machine, Ryan. I know the feeling though. Its one of the reasons I went to flat black.... Ya can't have nothing.
VT, that is 'bout the funniest thing I have heard in along time. Ryan, sorry to hear about the coupe. You'll know if the bodyman is the right one, He will probably start to tear up as he surveys the damage. Of course it doesn't hurt to see a few examples of his work as well. Your '38 is one of my all time favorites, It just screams HOT ROD. Fix your baby and get it back on the road where it belongs. George
Ryan, get online at Eastwood and pick up a good hammer and dolly set, along w/ the book 'The Key to Metal Bumping'. Look at this as an opportunity to learn the proper way to remove dents. You'll be surprised at what you can do. Then take it to a shop and have it sprayed. For what it's worth, this is kind of the stance I take on all ****ty stuff that happens to me (car or otherwise). If you can learn something from a mishap., the sting dissipates more quickly.
Words to live by. I swear I don't learn stuff as well if it's not a repair to get me back on the road.
What's REALLY annoying is when you're preparing to fixit and you suddenly realize that the SKULL of the alleged perp would be the PERFECT shape to bang out the dent and you don't know where to find it! What would Genghis have done?
ouch, that ****s , had a simular thing happen to my chrysler, my 1946 chryler is almost ready for paint, and the other day when i came to the garage there was a 1½" dent over one of the frenched headlights, no idea who made it and in my garage only 3-4 people have access why can't just people be stand up and admit doing something like that, no one knows nothing
With all the people here on the board, no one lives near KC and knows how to do body work? Amazing!-MIKE
That stinks, I know how you feel, Ryan. Last year, I was out in my front yard when I noticed that something was wrong with the roof of my '52 F1, which was parked along side of my carport. About 3/4 of the whole roof had somehow become one huge dent. I have no idea how this happened, it looked like someone had jumped on it. When I saw that, I really felt like I was going to throw up. Fortunately I was able to pop out the dent by hand from inside the cab, and since the roof already had some small dents and the paint was worn to a nice patina, the damage is hardly noticeable. It still grills may cheese a little whenever I happen to notice any of the small creases that remain in the roof as a result of this.
That ****s , I know exactly how you feel. But as my Dad has always said " If you don't use them your just saving it for someone else." Unfortunately stuff like this will happen.
ditto that. being able to fix stuff like that yourself takes some of the sting away from other people ****ing it up. my bikes gas tank is set for it's third paintjob, the same color, from "****" happening. one was when i dropped it while handling it, putting a potato size dent right on the top! some irony to Ryans story, i *****ED OUT my girlfriend, on SUNDAY, in the TARGET parking lot...for not returning the cart to the cart corral because it was raining, and she "couldn't see" where the cart corral was. i gave her the whole"you don't know what it's like to have anything nice" talk and all. i don't think you were in Colorado anyway, don't sweat it ryan, it's just a car. it's just that "patina" thing so many are ******* over. leave the dent, get some striping buddy to letter on the dent "55 year old original paint, Target parking lot" people will understand the battle scars. years back, in MN there was a red contemporary styled merc custom that did the rounds of the local shows, and a little mag coverage, one day at a show, the molded front bumper was cracked, and lettered over the damage "hit a ****". i respected the guy for having a nice car, that got DRIVEN.
Sorry to hear about the dent Ryan, it ****s when other people have no respect for your stuff that has more than just the monetary value to you. Here is a funny item to go along with Ray's story. On my old 70 Camaro drag car, one day at the track I had a little mishap and slid/touched against the guardrail. It made a sort-of stripe along the p***enger side fender of the car, and a stripe with small dent along the rear quarter. Rather than fix it, I just took a sharpie pen and wrote the date on the dent and called it my "racing stripe". The humor made it not feel so bad.
