The other day I bought an OT truck from a buddy. It's old but it is OT. Anyhow I called my insurance company Progressive as I have all my stuff with them and they were advertising they covered antiques and classics. After being moved to the front of the line cause I'm "Platinum" they said their special team would handle me. Imagine my surprise when Haggerty came on the line. Turns out Platinum meant I'm just a floozy to be passed around Progressive was pimpin me out. After getting over my shock I asked if I would be dealing with Progressive or Haggerty as far as billing etc. I was told no I would be dealing with Haggerty. Not really happy with that but I asked for a quote. They asked me all the questions how was I going to use the truck. I told them it would be a show, cruise in parade ,club vehicle. I told them it would either have a historic plate or YOM they of course asked about claims and tickets. They obviously had access to my Progressive stuff cause they could see I had two dailys this would be a pleasure only vehicle. They gave me a quote seemed reasonable so I said lets go ahead quote was $280 they went through questions again for the application when we got to the end the guy said how do you want to pay for it it's $400. I was shocked as they had said twice premium was $280. When I objected he said I would have to prove it was registered as a historic or YOM then they would give me a refund. I said you aren't going to pull the classic bait and switch on this old boy and work on my money. I'm P.O.ed at Haggerty but just as mad at Progressive for saying they insure antiques and Classics when they are just pimps. Anyone else been treated like this?

Funny as here you can't get the car registered with out insurance on it...I would go to another Classic car insurance company and see what they say or if you think the $280 is reasonable then if refund time isn't going to be too long what can it hurt? Send them some pics, they should be able to figure it out..

  4. You would be happy with Haggerty.

  5. Dunno' brother ... but I switched from Hagerty's and went to Grundy's. Coverage same, but I saved some bucks. Like really, a lot of bucks. What I paid for six months now covers nine !

Hagerty's was always really good to me, Progressive .... not so much. Tried to pull a fast one on a off topic diesel 4wd Excursion. Took me many calls, letters, and weeks to get right on that. I do not like Progressive. All my dealings were separate for both companies. Figures one would refer the other, just to keep business in the same house.

Anyways ... there's my spit and shine. Good luck !!!

Insurance companies treated me worse than that, when I was spending more on insurance than most guys make in a year.

It seems to be a business that attracts dingbats.

I know Ryan doesn't like politics on HAMB, but if they matter to you, I sugest you do a bit of research on the politics of the owner of Progressive. If you think anything near like me, you won't like what you see.

to add fuel to the fire and at the same time report the fire seems a bit odd?

I've been with the same insurance "underwriter" for 30 years. I check their prices every other year, or if there's a big increase. But that policy has moved thru several "insurance agents" in that time. My record is clean, minimal claims. They hold my homeowners, autos, and "classic cars"' that's laid off to Hagerty. When I've had a claim, the agent handles it. He's got a bigger vested interest in me as a customer, and IF he's writing business with a company, he's got more horsepower on my part. That's why I don't buy direct from an underwriter.

Hagerty has been good and competitive for me.

I don't know how it works where you are, but classic or YOM plate have some restrictions in WA. I can understand why they want that, and I'd be surprised if the refund wasn't prompt if you sent the info in. Hagerty did require appraisals for the agreed value amounts.

I switched from Progressive years ago after a motorcycle accident. I was hit head on by a teenager that was in my lane and they told me I was at fault. The agent informed me that their policy is if there is not any witnesses, they automatically blame the motorcycle! Screw that, cancelled all my vehicles.

I've always had Grundy and been fairly happy with them. It is a little disturbing that they seem a little sloppy office-wise, like losing my application then finding it, and little things like that, but they are a lot cheaper than Haggerty.

Last year, just for giggles I decided to try Haggerty and when they got to the end of the quote they tacked on $75 because my car is stored in our shop, not our home garage. I told them it is alarmed, has cameras everywhere, and is a block from the Sheriff substation, but they wouldn't budge.......so I went back to Grundy. It just pissed me off a little that they added that charge on, plus, they were a lot higher than Grundy.

If they quoted $280 then switched it to $400, I would have told them to pound sand also. I like Grundy just fine and I also agree with the dirtyoldman about Progessive.

It seems to me that the $280 quote has not been baited and switched - they just need some paperwork from you. Once you give them the paperwork, you'll get the $280 rates. What are they supposed to do? Give you the antique license plate rates before you've gotten the antique plates??? You may not realize this, but some people might lie about such things, or procrastinate. Once you have your antique plates, show them proof and then you get the cheap rates. Why is that hard or shifty? Am i missing something?

When I bought the latest 3w, Grundy asked what was the vin number and how much coverage I wanted. I told them and the lady said to wait while she checked with an underwriter; she came back in just a few minutes and said that would be fine. Never asked about plates, how it was used, etc. Of course, they already had the rest of them insured and had for many years so I guess they felt they knew me and didn't want to waste my time with questions when they already knew the answers. I thanked her and hung up; stuff was emailed to me right away and hardcopy was mailed to my home.

Quit complaining. Insurance here for anything without collectors plates is about a grand per year.

Collectors plates is a lot less but comes with huge use restrictions.

Like registration issues, insurance requirements vary from state to state. Every year when I renew my Hagerty policy, I get a couple of three pages of boiler plate that references Colorado residents only. Obviously, rates are different from state to state due to various state requirements. Comparing Michigan rules and regulations regarding car insurance to Colorado requirements is comparing apples to oranges and an exercise in futility.

I have had Hagerty for years. My Dad has Hagerty also and he had a claim a couple years ago and they paid up right away with no problems.
