this is some of the metal work I did on the wife's ride.... (although it is OT by 3 years)

Well I looked and looked and couldn't find a copper / brass radiator for a flathead in a 30-31 A. SO I picked up an aluminum one to use for now...I painted it black to look a little less modern.

Down the road if I come across a copper brass one I will pick it up and use this one as a spare...but in the mean time I can make some more progress.

I also picked up a early generator with a fan mounted to it (THANKS so much for the tip!!!) and I ordered a bunch of little hood related items.. like support rods, mounting hardware, hold downs and hinged brackets and whatnot. So even though I am mainly concentrating on the black 52 now and the EB I still want to make some headway on the coupe.

  9. Did you bring this back home? I'll be up that way over the weekend, maybe I'll try and stop to check it out.

Nope.... I am still storing it while I work on the the bronco at my place and the 52 at my friend's place.

Hopefully I will have the black truck painted in a few weeks..... it is getting closer.

Today I got side tracked with tearing apart my front yard.....my water line broke... fun fun fun!!!!

Well I am getting close to getting back to working on the A..... I got a few more parts for it this week and busted my butt in the heat to get the 52 in primer with the help of a friend.

and lastly here it is with the guide coat on.....now to let the primer really harden up then wet sanding time....

I am still planning on gloss black but it really surprised me the amount of mud it took to make it look strait!!!! I ran the truck for 7 years in semigloss with no bondo on it and never realized how hammered up the body was!!! none of the mud is thick at all but just about everything needed skimmed.

I messed with the A a tad more.

Well I picked up an early generator with a fan mounted to it and it doesn't look like it is going to work...... I would have to get new water pumps and a new crank pulley and I doesn't look like I will gain too much.

I also took apart the truck fan to see if I could shorten it and that doesn't looks like that can happen to easily.... the part that I though was rubber.... wasn't.....that is part of the fan hub..it was just covered in grease so I though it was pliable.

I think I may be best to MAKE my own generator mounted fan and use the 50's truck generator.

I also spent a few hours mocking more stuff up on it and drinking some beer with it..... it currently is still in storage so I am limited on how much hacking I can do on it.

I am one step closer to getting back on the coupe full time....

I got my black truck painted, and put back together... so it is DONE....now I just need to paint and assemble my wifes 68 bronco then I will haul the A back to my garage and try to get it done.

Here is a pic of the truck and a video

I was originally thinking of painting the coupe gloss black BUT now that I have the truck gloss black I may paint the coupe a maroon with black accents. Black was a LOT of work and I am not sure I am up to doing that again anytime soon!!!

    DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS!!!!!

This was given to me tonight... (I felt bad for just taking it so I gave the guy some loot for it).

a Cadillac Flathead with rebuilt tranny that hasn't been run yet.

the big question is.... should I take the merc flathead out of the coupe and put in this combo??

the problem is that it is longer and there would be no way to keep the stock hood on which I think looks pretty good.

here is a pic with the caddy flatty next to a merc flatty.

I would have to move the axle out a bit to get room for the engine to clear the rad OR modify the firewall... which would take away leg room (I am 6 foot 8 inches tall) and I need every inch of leg room.

The other downside is that I kinda had my heart set on the open drive, light duty 3 speed the auto wouldn't' be as fun.

My other options are to use the caddy setup in my future model a pickup build....

OR my 1950 ford coupe build.....

    what do you guys think???

I am kinda leaning towards putting the caddy in the 1950......but am really up in the air

I guess I need to sleep on this and maybe drink some beer with the engine and see where it wants to go?

  19. As much as I like the big old Cadillac Flathead, I'd leave the Merc flathead right where it is. Then build another rod with lots of planning for that heavy beast of a torque monster Caddy. Oh and be careful moving that Caddy on a modern engine hoist, trust me;) they flatten the solid rubber tires on them. Nice score though.

As I posted a couple of years ago on this thread, I'd be interested in the Caddy flathead. I'm working near Clarion, so just a little further frm you than Flop.

I don't have any cool parts like Flop does, but I make 'em go fast! Lol!:D

    Cool build- I'm subscribed!

I messed with the coupe a bit today in it's current temporary storage location where I keep some of my other junk. I fitted up the radiator and test fitted the swap meet floor panels I picked up (need to trim them some to fit right).

I also got some rain gutters so I will cut the old ones off when I get it back up my place.

Thanks to reading another thread on the hamb I found out I need to get a new rad........this is a GREAT PLACE.....LOTS of great info to just stumble upon!!!

I was wondering why I have been having some issues with a stock grill and radiator and stock hood on my coupe with 32 rails... I shimed the front of my cowl up in the air a bit and I still notice the body line on the hood isn't straight

I guess I wasted cash on a stock height rad.....DOLT.....now I need to get a chopped one and trim the bottom of the grill shell a tad.

This will also help me out with my frame bottom not being parallel with the bottom of the body.

you can see the issues in this side shot from early in the year

I also finally picked up a drivers side quarter window section from a fellow hamber down in Washington PA so when I get it back up to my garage I can cut out my fabbed section and welding ford steel. MY fabricated piece turned out ok and would probably be great with a skim of mud BUT I have been looking for ford steel to make a better repair for a while.

I cut down the rad shell a bit and took the rad to a friend to have him cut it down for me (looks like I can get about an inch cut out of it) which should help a lot. I will try to remember to take pics when I get the front back together.
