    hey,
I scored some great quality steel sheet in a hardware store of all places! The local "True Value'' hardware stocks small ( 2'X2' & 2'X3') pieces of what I beleve to be drawing quality steel. I found 24,22,18 , & 16, gage.

Are there any sheet metal fab places that stamp sheet in your area? Any hot rod fab shops that buy sheet in bulk? Some of the local pro/ hobby metalshapers in my area have gone together in the past to buy AKDQ in bulk. It's usually sold in 4'X8' & 4'X10' sheets, and a fork lift is handy , but the price was great!

I have only done what I have done on my car and learned by watching videos and reading forums. I have been practicing for about 6 months now and will be getting some real life training this month. I have used 18 ga. and .035 MIG and very basic tools. I will still need filler for a while.

Here's the latest patch I started. I did a small triangle at the bottom where the old wheel well was and started the beltline with a piece I cut from a door.

  3. Another hamber was trying to help me get some akdq after he got some from ryerson. Here's the email.

    Dear Robert,

My name is Larry Benbenek and I am the GM of Sales for Ryerson. I received a copy of your e-mail and I wanted to get back to you regarding it. The draw quality is a special mill run for us. We typically will stock that grade for a specific customer based on a minimum of 40,000 lbs. Sometimes we have inventory on special grades and I am able to sell a little to other customers so long as we cover the initial customers’ requirements. In this case, 19 gauge is not a standard thickness. 19 gauge is also ordered special for a specific customer. I’m not sure of the volume you are looking for but I would gladly send you a quote for this grade and thickness based on a minimum mill buy. We would inventory it and deliver it over a 3-4 month time period. Please let me know if this something you want me to pursue. I apologize that we don’t have this grade and thickness readily available.

    Sincerely,

    Larry Benbenek

You probably know this, but there is a guy South of me in MN that has had akdq sent to him the past. He might still have some. It was $62 for a 4x10 sheet. I have a friend that hauls back and forth to Michigan if that would help.

The two wood looking ones are the best looking ones.

  7. That would help a lot.

clip the ground to the right ear , put the stinger on the left set to 50 amps 2-3 seconds and you will be fine ...:D

any killed steel is hard to find in a sheet form for some reason and I am near the mills too.( plus my step-dad sells steel ) but I have access to HRS or annealed sheetstock which seems to form better than CRS . but the mill scale sucks .

have you tried to anneal the piece you work on before forming it . it can be done with a rosebud .. remember dull red, not cherry and still air .

and also most sheet steel till you get into the plate stuff its basically even number gauges ,
have you tried shapiro steel in st louis as they are a small distributor and often use others like RYERSON but do not have 40K minimums , another is Castle metals ( oliver steel plate) . and Jorgensen steel ( twinsburg)

  10. Yeah !!!
Only problem is they are 34 Chevy quarters with a 33/34ish fordish tail treatment. Way different than the 33/34 ford patches, I've already tried lol.
This will work though, still needs some filler as opposed to buckets of it.

Right now it fits. Some more planishing would make it nicer but I might loose the shape. I'm not sure how much better I could get it and it may still need filler.
Guys who can make this shit perfect have some real talent, that's for sure.

Dan pate is the guy. I will forward my friends info.

  12. I just got off the phone with a supplier.

He can get 19 gauge CRS draw quality in "standard draw" within 2 days- out of Michigan.
    That's 78.00 for 4x10 sheet.

But since he doesn't stock what he called " deep draw" there was no reference he could give me between standard or deep.

" AKDQ" didn't mean much of anything to him. Actually every time I say Aluminum Killed Draw Quality" I'm met with "what grade of aluminum"

I'd say what he is referring to as the deep draw is what you're looking for..

  15. That would be my guess too, and my luck

deep draw is whats used for things like spun metal tubes , gun cartridges , oil filter cases , its lower carbon and more ductile .
