History I finally understand why Studebaker went out of business...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by yorgatron, Nov 9, 2008.

  1. If I had a nickel for every time I cussed out the designs GM engineers come up with.. in my truck, the damned radiator drain is right over the steering box, so there's almost no way to drain it and get it all in a bucket... it runs all over. Too bad I can't fit a hose on the end of the outlet... but I suppose if I wanted I could solder a piece of tube into it, too.

You do know the reason the '61 Studebaker pickups were called "Champ" right? They had tons of leftover "Champion" scripts... just break off the i-o-n... the body was half of a Lark, the bed was the last year's Dodge (or Ford? I can never remember which one it was) tooling. They just didn't have any money for anything better - it's amazing they came up with the things they did. The only question is if the parts are bad because they're Stude designs, or because they're adaptations of someone else's old designs. I know the automatic trans they used from '57 on was a Borg Warner that Fords also used (as did Rambler), for instance.

The '57-'58 Stude/Packards are the only cars I've ever seen where they rot right up the C-post until the body collapses.

In the late 1950's, Studebaker bought the faltering 'Packard Motor Cars',
Lock stock and Barrel for the soul reason of transferring all or most of Studebakers mounting debt onto Packard and then gently pushing Packard over a cliff, thus saving Studebaker Hurray!!.....

Only one thing though, it didn't work out as planned and Studebaker suffered a long(er) and much more drawn out death that lasted into the mid 60's...............

I still love the design innovative of the 30's coupe express or the butt ugly 41-48 M5 pickups though, and they were reliable vehicles....

Even with 4 flat tires and a broken driveshaft it would be better than the Golf. Come on George, you can fix'r up. Just needs a little love. It's pushing 50 years old for heaven's sake.

  11. In 1961 my 56 Studebaker pick up with a 57 packard V8 did very well. I could blow the doors off of 55 through 57 Fords and Chevys.

  14. He he he,,,you sound like me about chevy's.......hate em all. However, i had a 1957 Studebaker that drove like a dream and ran good. But then that was in 1958 when most cars rattled, bumped, creaked, wobbled and all those things you said. But damn they were fun.................
