Customs I finished my Mysterion clone and have a book contract!

  1. Roth's stuff is (STILL!!!!!) cutting edge fine art. Fine art by definition evokes emotion. That's why humans value it so highly. And yes, you sound like you know my wife. This story goes into her repertoire of stock epics!!

  2. Hot off the press - I just contacted the publisher to buy 10 more copies of my book to hand out as consolation prizes and they said there is only one copy left from the first printing. It sold out!!!!!!!! Probably me buying copies to hand to friends and relatives, but what the hey. They are going to print some more.

  3. Mr. Jones, I completed the reading of your book. 1st, let me complement your usage of the English language. I have no concept of what editing was performed on this but the end result is very good. I had no concept of the time frame involved in this project. That was way more than I anticipated. I truly appreciate what you said about the journey and discovery involved in this. I had the misconception of symmentry in the design of some of the components. The enlightenment will provide me with a different viewpoint to the history of Mr. Roth. I still have the R&C that has the car on the cover. I ordered a Roth t-shirt like so many did. I thought I understood why you sold the car. I'm pretty sure I do. :) One of the few people you mention that I have met in person is Mark. Your book shows insight into the personality required to do this. Thank you very much for sharing the journey. :)

  4. Thanx for the kind words. You are exactly for whom I wrote the book. They didn’t do much editing of content but threw out a couple key photos that didn’t make me happy.

I really haven’t missed it since selling it. But then moving to Texas has conumed my attention. We are going to Michigan next month to visit it at its new home. As you probably know, it’s the journey., not the destination that matters.

Found this story in the Hot rod archives to add to the story.

The Mysterion signaled the beginning of Ed Roth’s asymmetrical (some would say dysfunctional) stage. The dual-engined gas dragsters that proliferated during these fuel-ban years might have inspired the twins that buddy Budd Anderson procured from Ford (said to be 406s, but probably ordinary 390s).

During transport between shows, their combined weight repeatedly cracked and ultimately collapsed the Swiss-cheese frame, which was stripped and junked along with the body.

Reader Don Baker saw the HOT ROD Network preview of this article and sent in a memory of riding bikes with his childhood pals to a show at Devonshire Downs (San Fernando Valley). Lacking money for admission, they arrived early that morning and sat outside, watching the show cars arrive, “when Big Daddy rides in, towing Mysterion.

He was alone and asked us to help getting it off the trailer. We pushed it right onto the show floor. Pretty cool at that time.”

We found the image on one of the final rolls exposed by staff photographers this year, yet the Mysterion was completed in time for the start of the indoor show season in January.

  7. Just noticed this post. That's a photo I don 't have, thanx. Note the car is fairly far along and still has the Olds engines with lots of chrome, not the famous FE Fords. Also it has a chromed tie rod, not the eventual rack and pinion gear.

@willys36 I was just watching the tv show Wheeler Dealer in the episode where they fix up a Falcon Ranchero. When the are selling it it is parked in what looks like a large warehouse containing many cars.

As the camera pans around, well what do you know a short glimpse of the Front end and engines of MYSTERION. :)

  11. Wow! I'll see if I can rustle up that episode.

It's one episode where they are in the USA with the new mechanic. No idea on the time frame. Looks like a modern garage space either for a collection or maybe one of the auction sites all nice somewhat modern cars. The Ranchero gets painted two tone Blue and White. It's in the last 15 minutes or so of the episode when they are done fixing it and meeting a buyer.

  16. Look what I found. Stahl's museum where my Mysterion clone now lives is slowly reopening with restricted visitors. Last week legendary show promoter Bob Larivee who owned and showed Mysterion for a year or so visited the museum and posed for this photo with the car. What a huge honor to have him do that, don't even care if he still hates the car! Also attached is the classic photo of Bob and Big Daddy hamming for the camera when he acquired the car in the day.

  18. I finally found that episode of the TV show. I went thru it but didn't find the shot you mentioned. If you get a chance could you find it and take a screen shot?

  19. Any thoughts on having another run of printing your book? What's the minimum quantity?
