Projects I forgot how much I missed the smell of having an old car in the garage.

My youngest brought one of his girlfriends by the shop one day. She walked in, took a deep breath and said" I love the smell of a shop". I knew I liked that girl........

One time I came out of the market to find this 80 year old guy sniffing the engine in my roadster. "Nothing like the smell of a flathead" he said-

MAybe we can get that stinky candle place at the mall to carry candles scented w/70 yr old mohair. Or light gas and oil combo.

Years ago I always liked going to pick up a Bugatti from a customers garage, he had 12 of them. The place smelt great, you had to be careful not to slip on the oil covered floor.

The smell of a '54 Chevy after years of outdoor West texas Storage that lingers even after a full redo, the smell of Volkswagens, my model A, and my '50 PU all make me feel relaxed inside. When I'm having a shitty day I just go sit in one of 'em for 10 minutes and I am quickly reminded of what a lucky Son of a Bitch I am in my life. The smell of fresh paint is another one that relaxes me. Everybody should be this lucky, just imagine what a Wall Street Banker is smelling these days for comfort.

Old Pontiacs do it for me. Something about the Morokide vinyl. I've always loved that smell. Old air cooled VW's have a certain stink too. Drive a '66 through 3 winters as your only car and you will have a certain appreciation for American Iron. Indy

How about cracking open a Model T Ford engine? Something about that old transmission band lining and oil that is very unique.

Ive been raised to love that smell. My dad would always say "come over here and smell this car" at car shows. It really cant be described.

And johnybsic, i know EXACTLY what you mean about the guitar case smell ;)

definitely one of the joys of the hobby!

I agree that different brands have characteristic smells. they also have characteristic sounds and habits. some good, some not so good.

I always enjoy opening the door to the warehouse and taking in the smell. But it is a blend of them all. Because they are all under car covers, the individual smells are well contained and the differences evident.

The smell of a 60's Mopar is almost channel number 5. My 66 charger has a smell you can't forget. My 1953 Chevy 3100 truck smells the way it did when my Grandad had it. The gas tank is inside with you, even with new interior it still smells like it did in the 60's The manual trans oil that's on the case... on a good summer day you can get a good wif.

  23. Mohair interior, grease and rich exhaust - can still smell Grandmas perfume in her old DeSoto on occasion

There is nothing better than the smell of ratty old car, gas and vanilla pine tree air freshener all mixed together. I wish they made cologne that smelled like that

  26. Hi Guys,

In Australia we call OCS , and some deals are only done because of the smell of the old car, its gotta have that old car smell.

Whenever I'm at a show/auction/race/anything with an old car nearby - my son will call me over whenever he gets a whiff of that smell. He's been doing it since he was 8 years old. The best scent seems to come from anything with an all- black interior. Sun-baked and hardened vinyl...

    Old Mohair...
    Horse Hair...
    Gear Oil...
    gasoline...
    Bondo Dust...
    Laquer Thinner...
    Carb Cleaner...
    WD-40...
    Enamel Paint...
    Mix thoroughly, and enjoy.
And from my childhood while visiting Gramma, out in the barn where my teenage uncles built their Rods... Throw in some horse sh!t, and old worn leather...
Ahhh... I can feel the heat of a hot Spokane afternoon in Hillyard. Thanx for the memories.
