If it has a accessible drain plug drain it and fill with water. If you need to fire it up simply drain the water and fill with fuel. Store the fuel safely or use it in your other car.

 

I'd keep looking for a hood and decklid. You'll find one somewhere far a reasonable price.

If you are worried about an explosion fill the tank with gas. The most dangerous gas tank is a half full tank with lots of air inside. We did 2 or 3 exhaust systems a day for 16 years. We welded every one and never pulled a tank. I did send a few home to get their leaks fixed before we would work on them.

Ironically I lost a 39 Willys sedan, 500 Kawasaki, Honda trail 70 and every tool that I owned when an idiot pulled his gas tank so he could weld safely. He took it out side and poured it on the tall weeds. A spark went under the door caught the grass on fire and burned the club garage to the ground and most of the hot rods inside.

 

Just another reminder. Gasoline is to be respected, in cans, tank, or wherever.
