so, my friend scores this on craigslist. He buys it because it is a good deal. being the nice guy that he is, he makes me an equeally nice trade deal to get it. I am STOKED and can not wait to build a car to use it on. By the way it is all for a sbc, and the blower setup is n.o.s as far as i can see.

Anyone have an idea what years this was available? the snout, tensioner, back plate and pullys are all cragar, the carb hats and the intake minfold are wiend. the mini mag is a mallory unit, as is the coil. The blower setup looks like the one on Roths beatnick bandit, so Im guessing 1959-60 or so.

That's pretty wild, is it for multiple V-belts or one blower belt?

Some stuff...all the first GMC kits, Cragar, Beatty, whatever were multiple V belt...
According to R&C, the Chrisman Dragster, the one that broke the 1-G acceleration "barrier", was the first rig to use a Gilmer belt to eliminate slippage and the big stack of belts becoming necessary as boost went up. I believe the belts themselves were pretty new (have not researched that) and this represented their discovery by rodders.
I believe that by the end of that decade the Gilmer had taken over with its simplicity and lack of slippage...I think that kind of brackets the date.
The arrival of the Mini-mag and the arrival of gilmer kits/departure of V-belt kits will require reading through a stack of old catalogs that I probably can't even find, but this sounds like a GREAT excuse to page through the early HRM's looking for datum points!
I believe a have stuff even into the early '60's showing V-belt drives, but they were disappearing by then.

so, what you are saying is the triple V belt set up would be late 50s, I will look through some old magazines to see if the mini mag falls into that era as well. Thanks.

  10. Hey Jim, anyone ever tell you you are an ***hole? Nice score. Too bad you don't have the skills to build a nice body to put it in.

I'm still kicking myself for selling my 6-71 years ago, rebuilt with manifold, heads, cams etc . Funny how your perspective on life somewhat changes when you get married.

pretty sure the "street blower" (V belt) and mini mag were available well into the mid to late sixties

I've had a few of the mini mags around but never ran one,
might have some literature around somewhere..
they were an external coil magneto that needed a mag box to work properly, they would start like a conventional points style distributor and when the motor was running it would switch to magneto spark
the coils are near impossible (impossible) to find with no cracks in the epoxy.
been a while since I saw someone actually running one.

    that blower setup is nice,
let me know if you want to sell it, I could always use another :)

  15. Also, Walden Speedshop is casting all the old Cragar blower drive parts. Search for the thread "3 groove blower pulleys" Boones posted a Facebook link with photos.

Very nice. The Idlers look to be the earlier version. The 1st cragars were pretty primative and had a oiling flap on the snout. The later snouts (mid 60's) had the cragar logo casted on the snout.

The hardest thing to fing is the crank pulley. Great job.

  18. I sent Walden an email, still waiting for response. Does that look like all the parts needed for a drive setup? I have a 6-71 fresh off a diesel. I have a source for setting up the inside bearings, etc. but no drive. I want to run it on a 283. I also want to run a generator. Can one be made to work with this Cragar setup?

The snouts that Walden are offering look like the two different lengths needed for a 4-71 application, hemis were longer then the sbc I think. To run a 6-71 you need a much shorter snout. Cragar did make shorter snouts for the 6-71 but these new ones are to long. They made them for 4-71 for Hemi, Y-Block, SBC, Olds and Nailheads, there may have been others but not very common by anymeans. You can always make the generator work with either size blower.

    not familiar with the 3-71s,
will that one (with long snout) work with the 4-71 manifold in the picture?

  22. So all the parts are there but the snout? Can the long snout be machined shorter?

It seems odd but SBC 471 stuff is fairly rare look on the Weiand intake for the number cast in it. There were at least 2 variations. The earlier version had letters before the numbers and were available at least as early as 61. Also alot of people may not know this but Gilmer belts have been around a long time, Big Daddy's first blown car ran a 2" Gilmer set up with 8 carbs .

  24. Just got off the phone with Mr. Walden. He has a N. O. S. 6-71 small block snout he plans to use as a pattern later to produce parts, but is concentrating on 4-71 stuff right now. He said a complete drive setup would run roughly $2500 which sounds reasonable. He also said the 6-71 would use a 2" Gilmer as that's what Cragar started doing in '62, though v belts could be adapted.

I could give you the measurements off my snout if that would help. Gary Dyers made my entire drive set up (2" Gilmer), it was considerably less than $2500.00 Im thinking around $1000.00 but its not as cool looking as a Crager cast snout.

Very cool!!! I had wanted a Cragar on my coupe but knew I'd never be able to afford it.
