I have been building blown Hemi's for a few years with no intention of playing with 426's, but I couldn't resist.

How's it off topic? 426 came out in '64.

  13. Yep... STX-21 272° .560 in a wedge.
Different rocker ratio in a Hemi.
Ran one in a 440 for years.
My friend Jim here in Maryland owns
Racer Brown. He can re-dress or re-grind that cam if it needs it. Gene.

  14. Yep... second half of 1964.
Swept the Max Wedge right under the rug. The first batch had AFB carbs, second ones had Holleys.

Possibly OT on HAMB's "traditional" forum, not on the general discussion side.

I don't know where some of you guys get your info, of course 64 and 65 Chevelles are on topic, as long as they do not have modern large diameter off topic wheels....

  28. I have the softback Hemi book. It tells the story of how the 426 came to be. Really crazy story, was developed from paper to Daytona in just a couple months. Chrysler got tired of being killed by big Fords and Chevys in the 60s, decided to bring back the hemi. Discovered they had thrown out all engineering and tooling for the first generation so had to start from scratch. Story gets really crazy from there. Suffice it to say, they shipped 5 engines to Daytona the week before the race, put them in the cars without any testing in a car, let alone race testing, qualified them (hoping they didn't crack all the blocks like they had been doing on the test stand), then went on to win I think 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th on race day.
