American National Property and Casualty is where I have all my cars insured. When I called to have my 29 Roadster insured, 6 months with just liability was 240.00, but since I had several cars on one of there Chrome policys for antiques, show cars, etc., in years past, they wanted to see a pic of this one. I sent them several, and I couldn't believe it qualified for the same policy, as it sits in this pic., for full coverage, and only 60.00 ever six months, thats for 8,500 coverage. I don't know if you would say it was a Rat, Traditional, Hot Rod or what, but theres not alot invested other than time, and its covered....

    the insurance companies are clueless!
they dont hire car guys..now they sell insurance to people who own cars, yet they dont hire agents that know the difference between a wheel and a tire.
    ironic isnt it?

I went with Hagerty Insurance for my '27. No hood, no fenders, no problem. You set the value of your coverage up to I think $25,000 before they require an appraisal. I have been very happy with them for several years now.

I use Hea**** and Parrish insurance. No hood, no paint and almost no interior. I send in the pictures and they called me. They wanted to see if I would sell it.

    They insured it for $18K............

PS - Not the car in my avatar

i can see why they would call it that. i like the car, i dont really care about the name of the style, its just a name some call em hot rods, street rods, rat rods, whatever. dont bother me any. if your car was ever damadged how could they repair it to the exact state it is in now. if they paid to have ti painted, then you would wind up ahead in the end, they are not in business to make every one else come out ahead.

My son actually lost a small claims case in court because our '53 pick-up was "only primed". A kid at his school run into him on purpose hard enough to bend a wheel, bend a spring shackle, and tweak a fender. My son punched a dent in the guys fender,a New Ranger. The judge said my kid had to learn to control his temper, but also said that he would have punched the guy! My son had to pay to fix the Ranger,we fixed the'53. About a month later the Ranger was totaled???

  16. State farm NEVER balked about no hood on my T. Must have been the opinion of the local agent.

I have been State Farm since 1974 and found that who your agent is makes ALL the difference. My agent died and the company ***igned me to another agent who only wanted the premiums.

I called the company to complain about his service and they told me I could write a letter asking to be moved to another agent so I had them change me over to my original agent's son. He is a car guy and never gives me any problems. When I got my MG-TD he was more excited than I was and came by the house to take pics and add it to the policy.

Find a good agent and stay with him/her, it makes a world of difference when you have a claim or a problem.

As long as your happy with what your policy is then go with it, but if you might be dissappointed then look around. I'm ith State farm and have been for 20 years and they did the same for me, but told me if i wanted it to be in a different category then i would have to get estimates and different rates.

We,re finishing up my 48 Cadillac and should have it on the road here in a couple of weeks..for now I've blown all my money on getting it mechanically sound and driveable..I WILL eventually save up again for paint and upholstery..until then I will grit my teeth and try and be polite if someone calls it a "rat rod"..your car is pretty sharp by the way...

When I went to insure my non painted nonfendered 34' Ford truck though Haggerty they said NO WAY. They only said they would put storage insurance on it until the vehicle was finished. American Hobbyist straight up said no way also. I ended up only going with a traditional plpd insurance policy like a daily driver would have. I know someone with a very NICELY done t-bucket with a Lincoln
V-12 motor in it. He made his own manifold to house the five
Holley 94 carbs which 2 are dummied and the other three are operational. Haggerty canceled him because they stated that there was too many carburators making too much HP? WTF

State Farm ****s really bad and so does Allstate. Go talk to somebody like Haggerty's that deals in old cars.

  22. Man, we beat this topic up ALL the time. It seems that once you get "burned" by a company you hold that grudge forever......I know my dad does, won't use Allstate or State Farm. In the end I always say it comes down to YOUR agent and YOUR cir***stances.

I also think a lot of guys (and gals) try to Insure their car based on Emotional and monetary reasons far beyond what it actually worth. I have a modest 10K policy on my 54. Now if it had new paint and a new interior I could surf the web and see the value would be 30-40K at times........but the real world selling price for a car done like that is probably closer to 15-25K. I see other folks here that I bet are trying to "push" the value out 25-50% so they can make some coin in the event of a crash....bad kharma.

When I had my Riviera insured they asked me if it had daytime running lights, antilock brakes or airbags. The guy on the phone sounded like he thought I was driving a death trap.

I never noticed this topic before but yea, both of them low balled me on claims so I have a grudge. My bad.

You bring up a really good bit of advice here. Maybe he should search the web and ebay and find similar cars that have sold and go to the insurance agent with these to prove it's value. Also, isn't there such a thing as "agreed upon value" insurance? I think that's how Hagerty's and the other old car insurer work.

Mmm hmmm. "We'll give you $10,000 worth of coverage NOW, and give you the privelidge of paying up $$ a month, until it's wrecked...then good luck collecting from us..."

How I see it. I'm sure it depends on the company. Research is the key.

Finish it and they won't call it a RAT ROD, which is what it is now.

  28. Yes, there are actual agreed value policies.

As far as searching the web, I used to do that for my customers at teh hotrod shop when doing appraisals. It is a good idea to check anyway just to see if your thoughts are the same as what the market is doing.

Would some of you please define rat rod for me ,as terms directed at cars have different meanings depending on what part of the country you live in.

  30. from your pictures, maybe you better not complain about the 10 grand, or the rat rod thing. Seems like they doubled the value, so they can call it whatever they want.
