Well, I appologize. I thought a little bit of ball-busting humor would lighten things up. Every car guy I know does this **** to each other. Sounds like it's all fixable and nobody got hurt.

Bad car days? I don't know where to begin so I usually don't. I enjoy this place and the people by and large. I hope to share and learn here as well as have fun. If it isn't fun why do we do it. Once again I appologize. If that's not enough, well OK.

    Thanks folks.

I made it through today, so I guess "bad things happen in threes" is true enough. Got a rental even though insurance hasn't been sorted yet. I'm just glad I have a car agian, even if I'm embar***ed to be seen in it. A Corolla is no Mustang, but it gets good air... :D

I think the problem is in the ignition switch. Might have a couple wires touching under there. When messing with it right after, I turned the key to the on position...only to on, not to start....and after a couple seconds, the car would start itself (and keep the starter engaged). I havn't looked into it anymore, probably wont for a while now.

The smoke came through the defroster vent in the dash. It's definately some wiring under there....most of it 40 year old wiring at that.

I understand this all too well. My coupe was giving me BIG problems...not running worth a ****..backfiring out of one of the six pipes, carbs out of sync...I find out that it's two bent exhaust valves, so I pull the head and fixed the problem, then sync-ed up the carbs, and it started running great. All of this time, I'm driving my '59 Cadillac. While I'm fixing the coupe, the transmission in the cadillac starts to slip...REALLY badly. So this car gets parked too. So I start driving my "winter" car...factory LT1 powered '95 Fleetwood Brougham...and after a day of driving this, it starts to miss intermittently on one cylinder.

So at that point, I have three drivable cars that don't feel like working, and I'm actually borrowing my Dad's car while I'm trying to fix my three. After a couple days, I was able to fix the problems with the coupe, and I began daily driving that. My O/T car was a BIG ball of wax to figure out....I worked on it for two days trying to diagnose the problem before giving up and taking it to a Firestone garage...2 guys on it for 6 hours couldn't figure out the problem. Took it to the dealer...they had it for 3 days and couldn't find the problem. So I get it back and it's still broke. Eventually, I figured out that one of the injector wires had a short in it...the wire insulation looked fine, but the wire inside was broken. Cut it, spliced it, and it has been all better since.

The '59 is still messed up...I am going on tour with one of my bands for the entire month of February, and I plan on doing some major rebuilding on that car when I get back. The trans needs to come out and get rebuilt, the front brakes need to be replaced, the front wheel bearings need to be replaced, and I have a completely rebuilt '59 Caddy rear end that needs to go into the car to replace the one that's in there with the worn out third member and the oblonged axle bearing bosses....

    Just remember...they're never done....:D

So cheer up man...we all feel your pain here....it'll get better soon...

If you have luck like me then you will have a total of 3 bad things happen REAL close together! Then something really good will happen that will make you forget the bad things, then life will go back to normal! Hang in there the ride is almost over!
