I was on a roll finishing the last of the tubing for the back seat in my 29 Tudor and Freakin grinder broke!!!!!! I am sick of this shit. Last month my Craftsmen took a shit now this Ryobi shits after only 3 or 4 weeks. What are you using and how long have you had it under heavy use?
Portable grinders? I have had the same 4" makita forever. at work we use Millwauke(spelling) and they die every couple of months.
That is the reason that I buy those $12.00 swap meet cheapies. The current one that I have has been going for about 3 years. I guess if I was using one 40 hours a week, I would break down and spend some big money, but until then, I will stay on the cheap side of the fence.
I keep thinking my old cheap Black and Decker (from Walmart) 4 incher is bound to die, but it just keeps grinding. I've had it at least 5 years and have ground down dozens of disks. I abuse the hell out if it too, figuring, what the hell, it's a cheapy. Maybe I just got lucky.
Black & Decker and Dewalt tools are made in the same plants. The Dewalt's just have a little heavier case and bushing in them. I work for a Black & Decker company and bought all my powertools though an employee purchase program, so I went ahead and bought the dewalts, which were about the same price as the B&D's at stores. If I have to go out and buy the stuff now I go with the B&D stuff. It's just as good.
Craftsmen, Ryobi? There's your problem. Buy industrial quality and you'll get performance. Either that or buy yard sale stuff you can afford to trash. The middle ground is the expensive way.
i've used the piss out of my Craftsman industrial for the past 2 years (at least). you used it. i did have cheapy one last about 2 years, and believe me i use the hell out of my grinders.
Makita 15 years and counting! I've had to replace the brushes and the switch. It's one of my most used tools.
Could be the way you use it. I have a good Metabo, and a cheap Makita. I've had them for years, but when I get some help in the shop, they seem to burn out quickly. I noticed that the other guys use their entire body strength, and weight on it when grinding welds. They have to be told to let the speed of the grinder do the work, instead of bearing down on it.
Sounds like a long or low amp extension cord to me.........we've all done it. it'll kill a grinder[or any tool used on one] pretty damned quick.
I have a porter cable that i use a lot and i'v had it for 4 years. Plus my brother inlaw works there so i get a bargain.
I've got 10 years on my Makita. The switch just doesn't stay on by itself, but it's still going strong.
I've had a Mikita 4" grinder for 12 years now and it works just great.Replaced the brushes and fixed the electrical cord;gets tons of use.Excellent tool, buy one and you'll be converted!!
I finally broke down and bought a refurbished makita off ebay...haven't gotten it yet but i figured it'll be worth it.
i have used my makita 4 1/2" grinder for a couple years and it hasn't gave a single problem. craftsman=crapsman
I have been using Harbor Freight 4 1/2 inch grinders for many years. I have not had one crap out yet. I have one with an aluminum oxide grinding disc, one with a wire cup, one with a 80 grit 6 inch sanding disc. While I was in HF yesterday I bought another one for $13. When they break toss them
