so i got home today and there was a notice on my door that i need to remove the one car i have on the "lawn" (not really the lawn just dirt) and either get rid of or register the other cars that are sitting in my yard. it also said that i can not have any non running cars sitting in my yard. so i am a little upset because i wont be able to keep my buick. it's listed in the for sale forum. but if it doesn't sell in like a week and a half i'm going to have to strip it. because i won't call a junk yard to come pick it up and crush it. i can understand why they don't want people with lots of cars sitting at there house but when did it become the police departments job to make you get rid of your property in 30 days or get fined 25 bones a day.

  2. There must be a # you can call, and maybe the person's contact name on the letter. Call them up and politely inquire as to what the issue with the car is.
I saw your ad in the cl***ifieds, and if it will run with minor work, get it running. The only other beef they could have at that point is that it is wrecked on the side. So offer to cover it.
If it runs and moves, it is officialy operational. Just because its got some dents isn't enough to make you dump it.
You should see some of the **** people drive here.

If you need a couple of doors, I have them. I have that same car I'm parting out.
I'd buy it but I wont be in your area until Bonneville week.

Usually they don't tell you everything, a lot of those rules have a COST CO tent loop hole. check it out. Our nusance laws stipulate a structure supported on 4 legs with a roof.

Thats so awesome that you can make the yard and car look even trashier by throwing a 30 dollar pvc pole tent over it, and the law has to eat worms.

well if i can figure out how to keep it i will let you know about the doors. do you have a good center post and a kicker pannel too?

i'll call in the morning and see what the laws are because i really don't want to get rid of it. i just haven't had the time to work on it.

  6. I've got everything. Thats why I'd consider buying it. But right now, I'd be in a better spot hooking you up with parts than I would be spending money for a car.

  7. The other alternative is to License the car... it costs a few bucks... but not $25 a day... plus it buys you a YEAR to sell it!!!

Then park the Buick in the drive and park your daily on the lawn (dirt)!

I've seen city ordinances allow you to park trailers on your property but not Non-running or unlicensed car... so people have their junkers on car trailers under a neatly wrapped tarp!!

I've become the "King" of legal ambiguity!!!

Don't want to be a **** house lawyer but It works here because of the wording in the law, the notice should cite the regulation you violated and you can look it up on their web site, Hate to see a car guy get hosed by the clean and comfy croud.

  11. Nowadays, they have these things...great flying machines! And theres a guy inside that looks out a little box and it "catches" whatever it is he sees through it.

Then the bozo from the city shows up with a piece of paper trying to scare the **** out of you.

If the car is in a garage or shed, or under your dreaded PVC pole barn, or equivalent, they cant see it.
The typical law states something to the effect of not stored in a way to be visible to ORDINARY public view.

That does not cover them looking over the fence or flying over.

If its in the front yard, you are pretty much asking for it.

  12. Me too, and it works. The best thing to do, however, is print off a copy of whatever law or code you are charged with breaking. Somewhere in there it will say what you need to do to be compliant. Do what it says, and hand that to the inspector. (more often than not, they do not know the rules themselves)
    Done deal.

So let me get this straight, you live in the city and you're pissed that you can't park on your lawn or leave multiple non running/unregistered vehicles in your driveway? If I lived in a nice place like SLC and I was your neighbor I'd probably call the city on you as well. You want to live like a redneck move out to the sticks.

  15. Uh.. you must have never been to slc! why would you call the city you got no balls to talk to the man? most of the time if someone here's from a neighbor they will try and make them happy. thinking like this is the reason we have the "property police" people would rather rat out someone rather than talk to them. not saying having junk around is ok either but at least give the guy a chance.

Brilliant....I love it when people break a law or ordinance then get pissed when some city official enforces it. I pushed my racecar out of the garage for a weekend to do some drywalling. The next week after the car was put away I got a notice from the city to remove my disabled vehicle. I asked my neighbor why he called the city and he denied it.

How long have the above mentioned cars been in plain sight in the front yard? I got a notice for less than 48 hours. If they've been sitting out there for weeks, months then that's disrespectful to his neighbors who might just happen to take some pride in their homes and don't want junk cars all over the place. I've got five cars and two motorcycles. My girlfriend who lives with me has two vehicles.

I'd LOVE to just stick one of my projects on the side yard or out in the driveway but I can't. Four cars and the bikes are in the garage, one is in storage and both of our daily drivers are in the driveway. I'm inconvenienced because now I'm out of room but that's my choice to have that many cars. I'm not going to be a **** and subject everyone else on the block to a front yard junkyard. It's really pretty simple, move or buy fewer cars if you don't have storage. But don't ***** about it when the city enforces the law.

BTW Utah, SLC in particular just p***ed Nevada as the fastest growing state in the country. That's why I said it was a nice place.

See what they say if you cover it up with a car cover. If you were my neighbor and had it in your FRONT yard, I may have an issue with it even though I am a car guy. Anything I've had at my house has been up close to the garage and covered up.

I did call the town once on my next door neighbor who had a non-op lift bucket truck sitting in front of his house. He rented the house out and obviously didn't give a rat's *** about anyone. It was gone within 30 days.

It all depends on where you live and what the 'hood will tolerate. You should try be a good neighbor.

  18. I thought America was the land of the free. Can't you just tell them to **** off? I can keep a car on bricks on my front lawn if I want to and I live in the medieval city of Chester in the UK.

It's no one's business but yours surely??? If they like a tidy front lawn that's fine for them but why should they have a say on what your front lawn looks like. Tell them to piss off and mind their own business.

Over here the best thing that you can say about your neighbours is that you lived in your home for 10 years and have never ever spoken to them.

Call the city's code enforcement guy and talk to him.

I had a similar problem many years ago when I lived in SoCal. I talked to the guy on the phone and he told me they don't have the time or the manpower to go out looking for code violations. They only act on citizen's complaints. I explained to the guy that the car in my driveway ('56 Chevy) was part of my hobby, etc., etc.

He was totally cool and understood. He told me if I put a car cover on it he would put my case "on the bottom of the pile." I never heard another thing from the city.

Be reasonable and these guys just might work with you.

  21. What's the chances of going and renting a garage somewhere? Around here there are bunches of abandon shops, garages etc. I have no idea what one would cost. I imagine fighting with the city is a loosing proposition. They really don't care what your excuses are. Having a shop somewhere would be a good thing anyway, would give you a place to work on and store your "stuff" ..

Obviously, I'm a car guy. That's why I'm here. However, if someone has a half dozen rusty cars in the front yard, it's going to piss off the neighbors and break some laws. The main reason most people would ***** is because the overall appearance of a neighborhood has a dramatic affect on the property values in that area. I have a neighbor that throws **** all over his lawn, parks ratty *** cars on the gr*** and generally is an all around inconsiderate neighbor. I won't call the cops on him. That's not my style, but I wish he'd do something about his 'curb appeal'. There are homes in this area for sale and I'm sure they won't get top dollar because this guy and a couple of renters on the street don't give a ****. I paid good money for my house. I work hard to make the mortgage payments. I take pride in my home and my neighborhood, to the point of picking up trash that others throw around. If you want to own a dozen old, non-running vehicles, that's your choice. However, I'd bet my bottom dollar that the laws were there before you were. Get a storage unit or pay a buddy to keep the projects behind HIS house for a while, until you can get them up and running or sold. Don't be 'THAT' guy on the block.

    And you'd be wrong.

Sure, I don't want my neighbor to have 15 cars on their front lawn either, but let's be reasonable. One car is not a junkyard.

I bought my house from the typical American family -- Mom, Dad, son, daughter, swingset on the side yard.

Now the side yard has the model A, a Jeep, a Suburban, a car trailer, and some nicely stacked tires. They are all parked neatly, etc. There's no swingset.

The jag is in the garage, and our two dailys in the driveway.

**** the neighbors. Their version of beauty is a swingset and flowers. My version of beauty is an old Model A.

The house next to me was the ultimate **** dump on a double plot, and it got worse in time. He had a collection of trucks and trailers in the back of the property which were vandalized by the white trash he rented to. I kept my side yard foliage wild and unkempt which hid the eyesore all spring and summer.

Fast forward to 5 years back, the house was sold and the new owner did an admirable job cleaning up the property and just about rebuilt the house and garage. He runs a business (not sure how legal it is) out of the yard, but you'd never know it from the street and everything from my back yard view is neat and orderly.

I was able to clean up my overgrown "shield" of bushes now that his house is an ***et to the neighborhood and I've gotten some nice comments on how nice my place looks. So it can snowball in a positive direction, all you need is a little pride of ownership to kick in.

I have two vehicles registered and insured as "Historic Vehicle" with plates and a liability policy. Both are clean (truck is starting to get some rust) , painted, fully ***embled, parked neat as a pin on a concrete pad I had poured especially for them. I had a neighbor call about having two "non-running vehicles", and a younger guy from Code Enforcement came out. I handed him the keys to the car and told him to pump it a couple of times and feather it a little and take it around the block, it needs excersized anyway, I'm blind and don't have a license anymore. We walked out there and he started telling stories of his uncles car just like it, I could hear his excitement. He drove me around the block in it. We went over and fired up the truck too, (two pumps and hit the key)he heard the rowdy, rackety idle feathering it with that sweet sub sonic thump like an elephant stomping its foot and said naw, (I know he had to be grinning ear to ear) he didn't want to drive it, afraid he might wreck it, he's not good with a stick. I had him move it for me forward and back so he knew it had brakes and everything. Told him to come back anytime and take me around the block :D I asked if they were an eyesore, and he said hell no, they are beautiful.

I knew which neighbor it was because she doesn't come over here nosing around anymore. I used to hear her Jeep (sounds like a 4.0L) pull up in the drive and sit, then go across the street and park. I wonder if she knows blind people can hear? :D:D:D I have other neighbors and just people who saw them from the road who come by and admire them and ask me questions about getting their "dads" cars running right.

A cheap car cover can fix the problem. At least it did for me in Illinois. I just put covers on my cars and never got any h***le

yeah it's not really parked on the front lawn its on the side of the house by the driveway but you can see it from the street because i am on the corner. i have been real nice to my neigbor that the car is next too. he is a reitired lock smith and got a key made for for the buick. he had told me on christmas that there was someone out looking at the car about a week before that. ony the one car is parked on the dirt and i only have one other one that is unregistered(i can register that one no problem). just that buick that is the problem. i new that this was coming but i was hoping that it wouldn't. the thing that really gets my goat is that i see much worse a coulple blocks away and nothing gets done about that and i don't want to turn them in.

Don't worry about anyone else Bartikus, just go get one of those car tent things, cover it up, and go about your business.

As long as you comply with the notice, why worry about what someone else gets away with. That just clouds your judgment and causes irrational decisions.

    Good luck selling the car.:)

Because a lot of us, when we buy our home, sign paperwork that says we will abide by the rules of the community. Those rules generally exclude junk from public view, a good thing for resale value and property value so those without the car bug are happy. Now, the car guys generally are unhappy or have "shops" in their garages.

I'm of the opinion that they don't mean ALL of your cars, there must be an acceptable level.

Example; Two cars, parked side by side under fabric covers would most likely be acceptable in my neighborhood.

If you politely discuss the issue with them, I think most jurisdictions will accept ANY car with a fabric cover, even on the street if parking there is legal already.
