Buy yourself a $250 ring roller and replace all of the wood with 1/2 inch or 3/4 18 guage square tubing if the wood is rotten. It will be the best $250 you have ever spent on any tool. I use mine all the time...got it from e-bay from one of those generic tool outfits....I replaced all the wood in my 36 Chevy with steel tube in my 36 Chevy truck in 2 nights.
Just rip the body off toss the wood and go buy new, or build from metal you first build the wood frame then put the skin around, the wood ain't cheep around 3500 for a 2dr coach a guy named Roddman in Indiana sells the wood kit or like I say if you are going to flip the frame style car use metal, there is absolutly nothing that will line up the same way twice so don't worry about bracing it have fun, I did!
I can't tell from the pics, does your door jamb on the body, by the door latch, have pretty thick metal plate? My '33 does, and that really makes it easier to simply replace the wood on the back side of that area with sq. tubing that will be hidden. I see you're not that lucky with the jamb on the front of the door opening....lotsa wood there...
Hi there appleseed north of Chicago, the neighbours of me are happy that I finished he last of my 83 mm screamy holes in my ch***is, I will keep you informed of the progress Lean
I gotta get over and look at that thing..... I dig the idea of a inliner....but you've seen my 54 so...... i'm bias. see ya tonight....
thanks a lot all you guys for your input. Im gonna have to look into the prices on a ring roller. As far as Milwaukee rodders go, anyone is more than welcome to stop over at my place. I got a beer fridge full of Pabst and Guinness, a nice 61 inch TV to watch the games on, and if you decide to bring over some strippers or some *****s we have a 6-10 person hut tub on the back deck. i'll be around the house all next week (except friday im heading to the Hunnert Car Pile Up) Shoot me a PM if anyone wants to get drunk and attempt to burn down a chevy. Trevor
I agree with getting rid of the wood and using steel, think of the extra safety you will be building into it! Oh yeah, better keep your 'other half' away from the car, last thing any man wants is a woman that cant stand wood!
ya can't burn it down.....gotta wait till the wood is out, then a burning party...the thought of burning 80 year old wood....
ahh jeff you silly *******..... hey maybe if you got ur *** over here to help rip out the wood we would have something to make a fire out of.
The model a freak here in town says if a nail sticks in it then it is good. I used most of the wood on my 31 Desoto. I made new top bows out of oak and just steam bent them. Good luck hope the car gets the attention the bike did.
Don't light that fire yet,use the pieces to make patterns for the steel tubing first.Wish i wasn't so far away,i've got a big crate full of dry rotted chevy wood i could contribute to the inferno too!!!
you wouldnt happen to know were i can get a pattern for the pieces of wood that the doors are screwed into do you?
That picture of the Ford Victoria wood structure is pretty much like yours but you have 2 more doors to mess with. Remember, the sills of that body are wooden too so if your remove the body and the sills are bad it will deform almost instantly leaving you will a hell of a mess to figure out. Best to determine how straight and square it sits on the frame as it is, shim and brace to get dimensions equal front to back top to bottom and then begin your steel structure process. Those pre 29 4banger Chevys are attractive little cars. The drivetrains were popular on the early board tracks and race circuits so you might have a dual project. A nice 4door sedan to carry the folks in and an old style speed racer to trailer behind it!
Unfortunately no but you might try www.chevywood.com if noting else it will show some of the pieces. You could always buy one post as a pattern, since they sell individual parts.
im kinda at a stand still right now cause i gotta weld bracing into the inside of the car to keep things from shifting when i pull it off the frame, and i dont have a welder yet, haha. i gotta get a new mig welder.
Lets see some pictures of that steel replacement. If any of you have measure ments or can take mesurements of your 32 chevy wood or just pictures of the would please let me know . I am missing 80% of the wood in my 32 chevy and wood like info to guide me in making steel pieces or wood. I would like to set up a site or collect wood data measure ments for those in my situations Thanks
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=238163 there is a side view and two rear views later in posts.. the spare tire cover reads "Rapid rickshaw" with burr fox..(disney character) the picture is circa 1960-ish? was one of my fathers cars..i have on a back burner...lol but some day...for sure. cheapst.
Replace all the wood with 1x1 steel tubing. I researched this for months for my 31 Chevy 3 window. There really isn't a better alternative. Your effort will be rewarded by having a relatively unique car. Like they said, there aren't many early Chevy's out there. I have 55 linear feet of tubing for everything, hope it is enough. Please post your progress. Killer bike, keep that up too.
got my motor yesterday! woohoo!!! heres some pics of the donor car and of my motor. if anyone needs parts off this car let me know, i know its O/T but the motor isnt.
What about the wood? Good choice on the motor. I got 1 1/2 doors done on my coupe, then my welder died. Saving for a Miller 252. Wood ****s. Here's the one I got done.
I need a heater hose off the motor...if you don't mind, the one with the coolant flush T! BTW, where was that electronic store you were talking about....need that resister
That was the best wood in the car, it didn't seem worth reinventing it. Besides, it does keep some of the original flavor of the car. Wondering when Ink is gonna show his wood.
I used to hate it. But it's out of my life now! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Go Chebby. Some pics of my 31 coupe in varoius stages of reconstruction
