I quit my old job and I Just got my DREAM job! AT A HOT ROD SHOP!

The SHOP: L and D hot rods in Ipswich Australia

PAY: zip till I prove myself (8day trial) , then probably not much if he lets me stay (this is OK I have very little experience so he is doing me a favour)

WORK: the crappy jobs the boss doesn't want to do cos he is too busy being awesome at fab work and building his own projects.

I am so excited I don't mind workin a second job to support myself cos I'll be teaching guitar to kids so its not bad.

Sweet man Learn every thing you can. I am sure once you learn a little you will be worth some thing to him. I started comunity college in autobody and needed a night job. Teacher was a hot rodder and helped me get a job at a hot rod shop. Started at min wage but I learned more from him than I ever learned in a class setting. And It turned in to a summer job worked there about 3 years with raises as I learned. Good luck with your job.

yeah I know its risky but I figure. I got no Kids my house is cheap my girl is supportive and I dont smoke or gamble so I gotta do something for kicks!

I just figure I'll work my ass off learn fast and never take any opportunity for granted.

If it all fails then I can go back to being a working stiff in a desk job but at least I could say I gave it a go.

Feels good to look forward to going to work doesn't it!

Be punctual. Be nice. Have fun. Don't take your work troubles home with you. When you get pissed off, remember who's the boss.

Awesome Man!! Some advice: LISTEN. LEARN. ASK QUESTIONS. ASK MORE QUESTIONS. DO THE BEST YOU CAN. READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. Even after the 8 day or after he says you can stay. I've had more guys that would weld great, and do all the other stuff. Until they got comfortable after they new they were staying.

Sounds like you are willing to learn. Pay attention to what the old guys are doing. It took years of experience for them to learn the tricks of the trade. Its always good to hear young guys with a interest in hot rods getting into it. I always say to someone getting started (NO question is too dumb to ask) don't be embarrassed to ask.Let them know you want to learn and don't be a smart ass.Good luck !

Guys like you are hard to find anymore... If you were here I would have you give me guitar lessons as partial trade.. Anyone I find that wants to do what you are doing only lasts a couple days and then thinks they are worth 20 an hour.. Learn what you can and listen. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Jason.

in today's ways if you can learn a trade it is good but no work should ever be free expect at least minimum wage for your time.

i dont care if you know knowthing sweeping the shop floor is worth $5 an hour at least

Remember that it costs money to train guys that want to learn. Breaking stuff, taking a long time to complete a task, time spent by fab guys or myself showing how it's done, etc.. I even have to pay insurance on the guy if he is in the shop. I never said I didn't pay them anything. I said they think they are worth 20 an hour after they learn how to turn on a grinder and prep an area for welding or cleaning an old chassis.. Jason.

I have to admit I'd work for free at a shop for a while until I proved myself to them, just for the opportunity. I have worked enough jobs that I hated, that payed over 30 bucks an hour,to where I'd rather work at a shop making a third of that to start if it was doing something I loved.

Good luck with all that. I hope it's everything you dream it to be.

  24. That's like quiting your job and going to heaven, "working" in a hot rod shop is like a hobby you get paid for, if you can make it work and your girl supports you it is heaven! Best of luck with your new "job".

I am very fortunate, that my love of hotrodding is also my profession.
You are one lucky SOB, like all the above replies, I fully agree.
Take the opportunity with both hands, be humble and learn everything you can from all the old guys..
I too, have two young guys that want to come work with me for nothing, just so they can learn about hotrod building.
    Enjoy the ride......
