Over the last 4 years I've been using another social media platform a lot, and I thought that there's a lot of people on jalopy journal who had great things to say about my car. Danny has not been neglected, the car, that's what I call it. Earlier this year I decided it was time to pull the radiator cuz it was running hot, you would turn the key before the engine came on. It would read 80°, that told me there was a problem. I took the car to the local radiator shop but learned he no longer had the staff to pull the radiator, so that meant I got to learn how to do that. Now I've changed a radiator in a 1970s car before but never in Model A. Out came the radiator and took it to the local shop where he found lots of mud in the bottom tank. So he pulled it apart and rotted it out, told me I better flush the block. I pulled the thermostat, housing and water pump so I did the most logical thing, I'm sure my neighbors didn't appreciate it. I took the car out to the gutter and stuck a garden hose in the various Open water ports. After that I put in a new water pump, new 180° thermostat and a Mooneyes gauge at the back of the manifold. Once it was all back together, Danny now runs about 150° most of the time. While the front of the block was off, the water pump and stuff, I found this great new painting system from a company. I think they're in Ohio called KBS Coatings. They sell engine paint that you can either brush on or spray on. It took three tries but we finally found a shade of red that we liked called fire red. While I was on a business trip, my wife did the final painting. They include a degreaser, then an etcher and a rust seal and then the final paint. It came out looking great. Once all of that was done were able to take it to the Outriders Picnic in mid-September. Car ran great. I've done more since then and I'll post those later. Danny will be at the Grand national roadster show later this month.
Good to have you back. I know those little covered filters are probably more 'trad' but always look more restrictive (less performance) to my eye, and it's the only spun feature on the engine. But it's about if you like it.
Iconic Hot Rod. Been one of my favorites since it debuted on the cover of ?. Will be great to see it at the GNRS.
Hey man, let's talk and make plans for the show. I'm thinking Friday & Sunday, skipping Saturday (the vintage guitar show is also in town, think I'll go there on Saturday).
If you look at the carburetor under that spun aluminum air cleaner, you will see it's the Carter AFB competition that was on the car when I purchased it in late 2018. 2018. Next story will talk about the carburetor. I do have a traditional 10-in chrome air cleaner which many prefer. I understand the new one is a bit more restrictive but I'm not doing burnouts in the car and it's got the powerglide that is pretty restrictive itself. Once I get a proper or better transmission in there, I will worry more about performance. Thank you for all the comments
I had this smaller one on my 53 before going to the bigger one in my avatar. Was no difference in running or power between this and the open element filter I had on it
