Projects I know, not another whats it worth....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by independentcustoms, Jan 13, 2013.

  1. Here's the deal:I am anxious to get going on a new project. However, I have two cars that I need to move out to make room. As of yet, I am having zero luck selling/trading either. One is a 58 Del ray more door, the other a 51 Dodge Meadowbrook more door. I realize I'm not talking about some real desirable cars. What I'd like is some opinions on parting them out. Both are complete, both run. The Dodge has a super clean interior, nice body, runs drives, 230 flathead, fluid drive trans, etc. The Chevy is a project, needs floors. The body isn't bad, interior is pretty beat, has a running 235, 3 speed.

I appreciate the help, I'd really like to move these things

    How much do they weigh?

  4. Absolutely not. In the past when I have had a hard time selling motorcycles, I stripped em and parted them and made far more than what I was asking for them outright. I've never parted a car, and these are a fair bit bigger than any bike I've owned. Just looking to see if it would be worth my time

    Yah, might be the price.

Easier to sell a running driving car than parts, unless you have the land to store the parts, the time to take it apart, and a couple years to sell them.....

  9. Trade me the '58 for any of the **** I have floating around - parts, cars, whatever.

It's not a big money car, to be sure, but I like them. Guide book says around $2000 for it.

The Dodge, about the same, ***uming it's in about the same shape.

parting out a car for maximunm profit is a ****load of work. if you think parting out a car is selling the bumpers hood and fenders then you will not get enough money to justify destroying a 55 year old car.

before ebay and the economy took a **** I parted a 53,52,and a 1960 Chevrolet. sold every part that was still good in seperate auctions, like don't sell a door with all the guts, sell the shell, then the gl***, then the locks on and on. do the whole car like that. I bet I had 150 auctions for each car. the only usable part I s****ped was the frame from the 52, though I did sell the trans crossmember from it and everything that unbolted.

  11. I went back and forth through email with a guy I swore was you about this car. Finally I asked, he said no but that you used to work there. The dodge is in considerably better shape, it's in my avatar. If the rear suspension was ****oned up, it's a decent cruiser.

  12. Yep, wasn't me. I still have stuff I have to get out of there, though.

Sent you a PM, though, if my old buddy is interested in this, it would be an advantage for me to maybe even buy it outright, he has a car I need to put one of mine back together.

  13. No, my idea is selling every part of the car that will sell, then s****ping whatever may be left. I've parted bikes right down to nuts and bolts. But I've never attempted to part an entire car. I do have space, and I guess I have time, but until both cars are gone I can't start anything new. I'm just not sure if it's worth doing, once you start there's no going back. I'm ok with selling parts on ebay, however I will not sell an entire car. Too many issues over the years.

I put both cars on craigslist, hoping to trade the pair for one decent project, and have had no luck. People are insane, their idea of old was an 87 fiero I was offered. I thought for sure I could trade them far easier than selling.

You never said what kind of money you were asking for them, maybe that's why you still have them.

  15. I am aware, that's because I never tried to sell them. I tried to trade them. That has gotten me no where, and I'm wondering what they're worth if I parted them. Then I can decide if selling outright is the way to go, or part them.

  16. The Dodge is probably worth more as a drivable car.

The Chevy, well, it's the low-end model with the base engine - while it's probably partable, the big money parts aren't there. Which leaves you with a lot of slow moving parts and either the car sits there as you take it apart, or you spend a weekend taking it apart and it ends up spread all over the shop taking up even more space.

A little research will answer your questions.Check completed listings to see what sells and for how much. Then decide what your time is worth parting, marketing, shipping is worth.

  19. I do appreciate the input guys, although I still am not sure what to do with them. Maybe I'll throw a price on them on craigslist and see what happens. This is why I generally keep ****, I can't stand the ******** you have to go through on there. It's mostly people wasting time.
