I've got finned aluminum valve covers on my 383 SBC and I've put the PVC valve in the one on the passenger side. I put the PVC valve in using a Moroso baffle/grommet. Didn't seem to work to well. When I'm driving at freeway speeds for a while then stab it a little I get some oil smoke out the exhaust (hate that*****). I've also found that after driving it for a while I'm oiling #5 and #8 plugs (they operate off the runner that coencides with the PVC valve). The compression is up on all the cylinders and it's a new motor, for what it's worth. I made a flat aluminum baffle (3 1/2 X 3 1/2 inches square) that I mounted about .035 under the Moroso baffle hoping that would keep the oil out but it didn't seem to work. I'm still puffing blue smoke. Has anybody built or bought a baffle that will work? Please, I'm getting desperate.
NO ONE will agree with me on this, but***** it... just vent it, the hell with PVC valve... its just a goddam vacuum leak and a nice way, as you've proven, to gum up your plugs. Yeah, when I rev up to hi rpm I smell it, and I have to wipe up a tiny bit of oil spray off my engine, but so what, big deal.
Thanks for the reality check. I used to do that and I'm about ready to do that again. I was running Moon 90 degree breathers before but even with baffles the way it was pumping the oil out of them I could hardly see for the smoke off the headers.
what are you running in the other valve cover? the pcv is only half of the system, you need to let fresh air in....personaly i don't run them on performance engines..like said before just a semi controlled vaccum leak, also where did you run the hose from the pcv to, how are number 5 and number 8 coinciding wtih the runner . [ QUOTE ] they operate off the runner that coencides with the PVC valve). [/ QUOTE ] i thought the pcv was in the valve cover?
[ QUOTE ] so are ya sayin that if i have a nicely hopped up 327, a pair of breathers would suffice?? [/ QUOTE ] thats all i have ever used, but then again i dont use vacuum advance distributors on the street either , and am constantly being told that my engine will overheat in traffic unless i use one. you will get a dozen different ideas and solutions, not using one has worked fine for me, unless the rings are not seated or some othe compression problem, crankcase pressure should be a minimum. i personaly dont like introducing that***** back into the fuel air mixture. i have seen a number of ways to make one work, some bordering on NASA engineering, i think samiyam had a pretty slick setup if you are determined to use one
I've been running 2 90* Moon valvecover breathers and an intake oil fill tube on my 406 for years without a problem. Mount the breathers on the top or end of the valve cover to keep oil out of them, and I use wrist sweat bands to absorb any oil that gets past the foam in the breathers. It gets revved to 6200 rpm regularly at the strip. Mutt
