31vickey....That sounds like alot of work to me, but then again if it finds something before the engine is completely assembled, it isnt much work at all...
My point exactly. Now you want to know what's a really lot of work that most guys don't do? Breaking in a lumpy cam when they tell you to do it with light weight springs. Fuck me that's a whole bunch of work right there. They say one sentence - use light weight springs- but it's an entire book's worth of work.
Yea it is, I actually did it on the last pontiac I put together. Having been out of building for a number of years, knowing of the crap oils now a days, and just down right fear prompted me to do it. Back years ago I would have just fired it up and took off around the block for a shake n break run. Maybe im getting old.....
And the new lifters sold with almost every flat tappet cam on the market are junk compared to what used to be. The old lifters had a nice flat circlip to hold the guts together, and now they almost all use a thin round wire clip that is prone to failure. Lifters without enough preload in the adjustment will get a little valve float at high rpm and that lets the internals spring back and dislodge the clips. The result is exploding the guts out, and at the least bending pushrods, or worse! Most the cam makers today stress that you make sure you've got at least 1/2 turn of preload on hydraulic flat tappets, and some a bit more. I always ran the old lifters with 1/4 turn, and they worked great, but not with the wire clips used today.
WTF, a place where people come and ask for advice, i guess i missed something also. I like to contribute when i can,and make a light fun of the situation, but never criticize,if i ever get to that point the boss will probably band me
Was it this ? I see it in your edit note http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ic08qOoMH8&desktop_uri=/watch?v=4ic08qOoMH8 You are supposed to be nice all year, Not play nice a week before Christmas. Santa knows ....
My high school friend is a engine builder and dose the mechanist work on my blocks,he ask all about the car ,trans., rear gear ect.ect. and what performance i wanted than ordered a (custom ground) cam( who knows) when it came in it had Chinese lifters and i bitched, cam made in U.S.A. and Chinese lifters ,he said , almost 90% of the lifters today come from china. That was three years ago and i doubt it's gotten any better, that's why i said in a earlier post that i don't trust them. That's my story and I'm sticking to it------------Jack
31 u pickin on me...lol 31 swade hrp hotrodon bb427 1marine i have several favorites here MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
Yep! Picture it like this: Some (pick one) US engine parts manufacture's business plan was to produce the highest quality parts. For one they wanted the reputation and to uphold it. Two, these are labor intensive to install, expensive to repair failures, & they wanted the mechanics to use their parts because come backs to the shop take food right out of the kids mouth. The manufactures made money but its expensive to produce quality parts and profit margins weren't considered obscenely high. They couldn't afford to make bad parts. Now the companies don't give a shit, and flat tappets are really obsolete - they can make them so cheap that if they scrapped 1/2 of what they made and had to warranty 1/2 of what they sold due to failure with 25% being good they would still make more money than they did before. Who pays the cost on that? What are you going to do if you need lifters? what are you going to do if you can't get lifters? They eye opener $64,000 question is what are you supposed to do if your know their business plan and manufacturing philosophy is "we need 10% of what we sell to not come back in order to stay in business"
Ha, one day I fought a no-power issue on my old 41 that I only start a couple times a year. Got tired of chasing it so just used the dollies to move it to the other side of the garage. Next morning at 7:15 I awoke to the realization that I never turned the battery switch on. Funny how it just came to me as if it was an alarm waking me up. That day it was the loose nut behind the wheel indeed !
Yeah!! I have Senior moments all the time!! In the future if it gets worse it will be like every time I go into the garage I'll see a new car!!Pete
ah yep been there bought and sold the T- shirt.... heck the 51 Henry J has the key (right side)for off/on and the push button, on the left... and some how (because i let OTHER people enjoy a drive), the dang Off/on (KEY)only keeps getting CRANKED Like its a START switch.., but hay people really get a KICK out a DRIVING IT.
Couldn't tell ya how many times i pull the motorcycle in the garage and hit the kill switch walked in the house and go out the next day to a dead battery, that dumb ass forgot to turn the ignition switch off( IF i ever catch that dummy i'll kick his ass) sometimers
Last night I ran the valves and then checked the compression. 180-200 psi on all eight. Today I buttoned her up, checked to make sure initial timing was set and gave it a shot. She fired right up! She blew a little blue smoke from the oil I had squirted in the cylinders but that was about it. She runs pretty good. I need to do a little tuning but that will have to wait a day or two. I really appreciate all the input and suggestions and the fact you didn't bust my balls to bad.
Good job glad to hear it's running again. Been keepin up with this thread since the begining hopin to learn as much as possible. Thanks Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I was reading some of the other posts about the Chinese lifters. It's too bad that crap is overtaking hot rodding like it is everything else. It's bad when a large percent of the parts on the shelves at the parts store don't work right out of the box. I didn't check my lifters when I installed them. I assumed since it was comp cams it would be quality. I use Shell Rotella T with additive to try insure the cam lasts.
