Now that I have your attention. I have a 29' Essex sedan. I also have a rear end from a 55' Bel Air that I thought was going to work. The rear end is about 53'' from backing plate to backing plate. My car is 55'' wide and I want to run the wheels outside the body. What are you guys running? How wide is a model A sedan body at the rear axle? Thanks.
The search function works wonders. Not trying to be a dick but that topic gets covered constantly and the search function is a wealth of info.
Take my wife's please....... Go to carnut.com some where he has a chart listing most modern rear axle assembly dimensions. http://www.carnut.com/specs/rear.html
You might want to figure out what wheel lug pattern you want to run also. I had the same problem with a wide body, 57 inches, and running the tires/wheels outside the body. I wanted to stay with 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern - the same as my front end. For Ford pattern 5 on 5.5": '73 to '86 Ford F150 half tons & '78 to '86 Broncos are right at 57 inches backing plate to backing plate and 65.25 inches mounting flange to mounting flange. I wanted a bit wider rear and not have to deal with spacers and worry about wheel backspace so I went with '92 to '99 Dodge Ram half ton truck. 61 inches backing plate to backing plate and 70 inches mounting flange to mounting flange. I didn't really try to look for Chevy, etc. bolt patterns, just Ford. Hope this helps.
i built a 29 sedan and channeled and slammed thehell out of it and ran a 34 inch tall bias ply tire...the rear end i used to fit around it was a 78 ford truck 9 inch rear end...ive been told by a ford truck guru that 78 ford trucks had the widest backing plate to backing plade width of any vehicles so far...hope that helps pm me for more info if you need it
