ok so i have a 1958 dodge d-100 w/ the 230 flathead. it runs great and starts before i can take my hand off the key. BUT it tachs out at 3,000 RPM and i can't figure out why. i figured it was my distributer so i went to a junkyard and got a new one and that didnt fix the problem...so i adjusted the valves didnt change anything... i changed carbs, nothing....i changed to a dual carb and intake .nothing.... i cant figure out why i got power gains but only up till 3000rpm and it just tachs and basically stops running till i let off the gas. i believe its getting no spark.... please help if u have any ideas this is my daily driver so i need it to run correctly all the way through the power band
what type of transmission and rearend do you have? stocker id presume. as pete said, its a flat 6... you dont have much of a powerband to begin with. nature of the beast... welcome to old cars.
yes its a flathead six and ive got the big truck 4 speed with the stock 4:10 rear but my problem is stock stats say it makes 120hp at 3600 RPM but i can only hit 3000 before the engine quits and i need to know why and if an HEI would help this
call up bill , at speedway see if they make a mallory unilite to fit it ? and a msd box , they work great in flat head`s . it lit my merc flathead up , also splitfire plug`s , they work great I will never buy any thing else
ive looked everywhere and only found one hei unit for a chrysler flathead and that one unit is widely used by people i was just tring to see if it will fix my problem cause im thinking the coil isnt getting enough dwell time because of worn distributer lobes maybe
it will every time there is a problem !!!!!!!! it`s the point`s !!!!!!! git rid of the point`s !!!!!!!! the only other thing I could add , is see if the advance is working and not frozen up ? good luck call bill !!!!!
biddy... have you done a compression test? what were the results cylinder to cylinder? check the points before trashing them, nothing wrong with running a points or HEI distributers, although.. at least with points you can check for wear. did you change the points/condenser/rotor/cap on the junkyard distributer? i a few things can be playing a role in your 600rpm loss... maybe the valve springs or cam is worn, maybe the timing chain has too much play in it causing the valve timing to be off... compression test and a thorough checkup of the junkyard distributor will allow you to rule out some basic things. is this a rebuilt engine or a high mile motor? its not easy troubleshooting mechanical problems over the internet... more details are needed.. all in all you are within the 120hp @ 3600rpm range.
yes i did put new points condenser rotor cap plugs and wires when i changed distributer, yes its got good compression so the only thing i got left is valve train i know its not the adjustment cause i tried that....yes the motor is low mialage rebuilt....so maybe it is retarded cam timing or bad springs........does anybody know of a company that makes a high lift cam for a chrysler flathead??not a custom shop.
