Technical I NEED HELP IDENTIFYING MY OLD 5 SPOKE MAGS

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. This wheel came off my 63 1/2 Falcon Sprint and I have a full set, they are 6" x 14".

I bought the car in 1966 and the wheels were already on the car and when I sold the car I put the original wheels & wire hubcaps back on and kept the mags.

I gave them to my father-in-law and he put them on the old Ranch Wagon when he owned it back in the earl 70's.

I still have them and cleaned them up to use on a 65 Falcon a few years ago but never got around to installing them, I would really like to know what they are, they originally had chrome center caps with no markings.

I'm posting a photo of the front & back of the wheel. HRP

    Generic? :)

Generally the wheels that are made by someone you'd want your wheels made by, have the name on them.

Wish I could be more help.

  3. Thanks Jim, I figured the back has a unique look that some of our older members might recolonize. HRP

Jeez they sure look similar to a set that was on an junkyard Olds I bought for parts in the 70s. I dont recall seeing a maker on mine either.

  5. The front looks like Fentons. The back looks different but it's been 52 years since I owned a set so my memory is pretty much gone. :)

  6. I had a set of those back then too. Were on a car I bought. No discernable manufacturer markings anywhere, so like Jim said, 'generic'...

how do you know that the wheel you found online is really a Keystone wheel? Look at this one

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/304411963458?

The one you got a picture of, says in the description, "Not Sure Of The Manufacture ( ET , Keystone ? )" He's just guessing.

  10. What ever it is Jim, it seems to be a steel wheel with a aluminum insert like the set I have, The one you show seems to be all aluminum.

I guess the question still stands, what are they? who manufactured them? HRP

Yeah, the real Keystone is all aluminum.

You have a generic steel/aluminum wheel.

Just to add to the confusion, I have Cragar wheels made with the same procedure. Steel rim, with the aluminum center welded in. Mine are called the GT, first made about 1964. The spoke shape is different than yours, but the methods are the same.

  13. I was thinking maybe the star pattern on the back side might be a hint of the manufacture, assuming they are generic were they cranking out these type wheels overseas in the early 60's? HRP

I recall J.C. Penny selling Foremost brand rims. Hell, they even sold Foremost brand slicks!

The Cragar GT uses a center cap that is retained by a big washer and screw, from the back. HRPs mystery wheels use the 5 screw cap. (yea, I have a set of GTs myself, and they have a patent number for the welded construction method)

What’s the trick welding aluminum to steel? After many years, the welds appear to be holding up good!

The aluminum center has steel "lugs" cast into them during the aluminum casting process. Those stick out the back, and are welded to the rim.

Danny, I found this one on line and the owner says it's a Keystone, it even has a K on the center cap

It looks a lot like the one you posted but there is a couple of differences but at a glance you could miss them.

    Your wheel
    [IMG]

the one I found on the net, this one seems to have a single raise circle on the back where your have two & it is reinforced with another circle, but again it's still a mystery.

  19. Sure looks like a Keystone to me, when working in the tire store in the late 60's there were several wheels with steel outer rims and some kind of alloy inners. The manufactures changed designs several times as they found ways to reduce costs and sometimes share parts. There was a company in L.A. that used to make and distribute something like 75% of the outer steel rims used by all the wheel manufactures. We hated Crager style wheels because they had the large stick out center that had a cap held on by a big washer with one screw as squirrel mentioned. Made for a weak point for the tire machine hold down and easy to break if you weren't careful. Keystone went to that style after a while but I think yours are very early Keystones. Appliance also made a similar wheel, only difference was the large "A" in the center cap. Almost none of the steel rim wheels had any ID markings, the all cast aluminum or magnesium wheels usually did.

The spokes are flatter on a Foremost.

  23. Me too, but some factory made them or possibly one of the known manufactures made them for a small company, I'm just trying to find out who, what, when and when, sounds like Rick on "The Curse of Oak Island".:D

I have no desire to sell them, If had them for 56 years and I'm sure they are older than that. HRP

  24. History says that American made the original Torque Thrust wheel in 1963 then the Torque Thrust D to clear the disc brake calipers on the Corvette in 1965. These were the wheels that everyone copied the look of so if you bought your Falcon in 66 and the wheels were already on it these were "early" no matter who made them. Link to an interesting article.

  25. I have 2 of the same wheels. Mine are 15x6 though, and 5x4.75 bolt pattern. Never have been able to figure out which mfr. IMG_0570.JPG IMG_0572.JPG

  26. Hopefully, someone will eventually read the thread and know exactly who made these wheels, I'm convinced they were made in the early 60's. HRP

  27. I just noticed something, it seems the wheels we have both use the same center, but the 14 vs 15 inch rim has different drop offset. Your 14 inch have less drop in the rim center as compared to my 15 inch. Kind of makes sense for a cheap wheel to use only one center size and then modify the rim drop top accommodate the more expensive center piece. My wheels do use the 5 screws bolt on caps. I got some repro cheap chrome plastic ones that fit.

Yes, I agree it would be nice to know the mfr. Also agree they are old 60s or early 70s at the newest.

Yep, 1972, my neighbor bought four new Cragar SS wheels, dropped them to off to get mounted, gets a call, they broke ALL FOUR wheels, takes them to small claims court and the judge asks if he had pictures of them before taking them for mounting, why no your honor, you can guess how that ended.
