so i put the bbc in the 56 bel air ..after running it for a little bit i realized there is a header leak ..i used the blue high performance fel pro gaskets and am trying to find the thicker aluminum type that will cruch and seal so this leak will go away its ruining the finish on my white headers with the black carbon....any links or pics will help

yes i used the good header bolts and yes they are super tight ..if i tighten them anymore i may snap a bolt in the head ..they are square port heads

I use to have a motor home with a 454 in it. It would push out the header gaskets one after another. I found a guy that sold graphite header gaskets and they lasted for ever, I was even able to take then headers off once and they were in perfect condition. Do a search for graphite gaskets, maybe you will find them. JC

Mr Gasket makes a steel reinforced gasket that work great. Using them for years with excellent results.

How thick are the flanges on your headers ?

  8. actually sealing surface is a good point.

My headers are 1/2 steel and dead flat on the mating surface. I had a problem with burning out the Ultra-seal material and the bolts would loosen up. Since the MLS gaskets, everything stays tight.

I have fixed a few sets of headers that have the tube protrude through the back and end in a "metal O-ring" as some of the header manufacturers like to call it. But the sealing surface is thin in spots, if it seals at all!

Might be a good idea to check that stuff out as well as looking for warpage of the flanges.

I've run the Fel-pro blue gaskets with my BBC and long headers for over 56,000 mi with no trouble whatsoever. As said check for warpage and also sealing at the header tubes

i couldnt tell ya how thick they are they are square port heads though. also my problem is that the tops of the headers even when tightend down to the fullest torque dont fully connect to the heads matte surface thats why i need a thicker gasket its not much of a space but its enough to leak ....someone said double gaskets but i doubt that will work and i cant find the gasket im looking for ...wtf

X2...These are very good gaskets and available most everywhere including O' Rielly's

  14. AH!

Yeah, your headers are FUBAR from over-torque-ing and need to be straightened out. No amount of gasket is going to fix this situation.

i dont think their fubar ..i can stick a penny in the space thats not that bad ...lol

  16. Uhm, no, that is bad.

I get you are kidding, but in all seriousness there can't be any gap. When there is a gap there is no surface compression and all gaskets need that pressure to stay sealed.

A new set of gaskets and 8 cents and you'll be good to go. :D

  18. LOL, reminds me of an engineer joke. " We built this thing to tolerances a thin as a dime. When we ran out of dimes we used two nickles. "

  21. you don't need to buy anything, fix yours.

All you need is a hammer, straight edge and some patience to get them back in line.

im beeing lazy and done want to pull them back off to much trouble was just trying to loosen them up and slide a new gasket in their

  25. Give up and use Red RTV silicone then. Put on a thick bead around each port and let it set up overnight before you torque them down.

You just are not going to find a thicker gasket than what you have already.
