It works out just right at 4.375", but you can't remove less and have a full spline. I only shorten the forged axles, that started around 63-64, and sometimes they can be marginal for diameter, so I comb through my supply, measure and select the ones to have Dutchman re-spline. I will pull one and post pics tomorrow, if I have time.
1932 -> 1937 rear axle. If You built hot rod, why not use Early ford axle? 3.54:1 or 3.23:1 ring and pinion easy to change, install... You can use tubedriveshaft or open. Ford original radius rods or split those.... Early Ford, Real hot rod, rear axle and enough strong, if You are adult and not make burnouts....
FWIW, I have a 51 ford F1 truck rear in my model a (full fender) and with a set of 40 ford 16" rims the fit is perfect... and it has a 3.73 gear. Upside: juice breaks, period correct(ish) Any part I have needed for it (bearings, seals, etc) are available. Down side: limited choices for gear ratios if you wanted to change. Might be to wide if you go fenderless I am not sure if the car and truck rears were the same width. Chappy
question: do you think I would need to cut one of the axle/tubes to make them the same length? or is that only with the 9 inch?
Good question, on my F1 I didn't care that the pumpkin was off-centered (it's very slight) because you can't see it very well since my pickup is fairly low and I'm running bumpers. With your coupe, you might want to make it centered if you're OCD like me and you'll see it easily when looking at the car from the back.
