I had the seat covered by a good friend of mine last summer. I wanted the seat to look very early, very simple. I did not want any pleats or fancy stitch work, just a plain flat colorful maroon with a diry white piping. It turned out EXACTLY like what I had in mind. I am now finally getting around to doing door and kick panels, but am kinnda drawing a blank. Of course they have to match the seat. I do not want pleats or anything extra fancy, but I do want something more than just maroon covering. Can anyone suggest or have any pictures with maybe some stich, or useing piping that does not look awkward? It does not have to be much, but just enough to get the point across. Does thia make sense?? Thanks y'all!
how about bead line across the door, an inch or two below the window winder, Just to follow the theme from the seat, and a map pocket sewn in the centre below that. map pockets are super cool, and functional!
What about just simple metal panels painted nice and shiny black? Maybe put a few very light horizontal bead lines in the door panels for some strength and relief and maybe a nice bead around the edges. Seat looks really nice by the way. Simple is way better.
Lowsquire: good idea on the map pocket, I may end up doing that!!! Stude trucks- Thanks for the idea, but I really want to go with the same material as the seat. It will be as close to a "full interior" as I have ever put into one of my cars
Chris, I could not help but notice the seat. I have a 31 Ford Coupe that needs the a seat covered, but in black. Also banjo wheel exactly the same w V8 button. The cab walls are all gutted like yours. Limeworks whittier doing the work. Who did you get seat covered at? Satch
Flat panel with map pockets is the way to go. I have them in my 32's side panels and they're a big help. Another one that was popular back in the day was to run matching carpet on the lower 6" or so of the doors and kick panels. The carpet goes a long way toward keeping your upholstery clean.
I felt the same blank you have at this point. So i decided to go to Keyston bro's and i bought a few yrds of marine grade upholstery much like yourself I didnt want all the fancy stuff just wanted to keep it plain and simple. Reguardless of the fact that one I didnt know how, and two I just flat outright couldnt afford it and three nobody was willing to crawl up inside my chopped and channeled sedan cutting the panels to fit is probably the biggest pain in the ass, But on the bright side you can get very creative. Check out how I boxed in my 10" sony speakers in the back corners and was also able to box in my gas tank. If there is anything I can help you with give me a shout. Here's a few pics I hope they help.....Also check out the marine fastners i used to insall the panels, you can pic them up at any marine supply store in different colors
Thats a nice seat, and the rest of the interior looks so solid. You've done your coupe justice! one of my favorites for sure with the overall attention to detail.
Take a look at Kirby Kennedy's coupe for inspiration. I think flat panels with a class envelop style pocket would take care of the slab side look and also would be period. Here are a couple (not Kirby's though)
Thanks eveyone for the thoughts! I do want a map pocket, though if you look at my doors you will notice a large brace running down the middle, they do not have a built it recess for a pocket like a roadster. I thought of putting smaller pockets in the kick pannels, and leaving the doors. I think an offset pocket would look out of place. I may end up going with more of a hanging pocket, one that would not require a recess in the door, but bulkyness comes to mind.
Here's a shot of the door panels in my 29 coupe that are just like the ones lowsquire was talking about. Clean and functional, they'd look great in that smooth maroon vinyl you used on the seat with a white bead and map pocket.
Maybe a slanted pocket on the kick panels. Something like a jean back pocket as to not be in the way. Might hold proof of insurance, registration,a pen and pocket flashlight. Or even God forbid a cell phone!
Love your coupe...maybe black...I always thought black and maroon looked good together...kinda classy...32
Hey Chris this is the inside of my dads 33 coupe done in 1955 the seat he had redone but the door panel were done in 55 change color around you get the idea.
Maybe dont put a pocket in the door panel try putting a 32-34 ford PU metal pouch in the kick panel like a 32 -34 pu had.
I would use the maroon on the bottom of the door, with a white top in a slight V with the white piping. Instead of the traditional straight line two tone. This way you can make your headliner white too. I think it would be clean looking just like the seat. What do they say, less is more?
