An underslung Dually - I Love It!!! Great concept, make sure you listen to Ian's advice to make it right........ Al in CT
17 years old. Some of you guys are missing the creativity in this young man. I was still gluing models and chasing girls then... You go young man! I like it!
You're doin good. You're 17 and you are working with what you have at hand. Just build smart, ask questions and be inovative.
How many people here have "flipped" the axle(s) on their pick up,to lower it ? Moving the axle on top of the spring,so the u-bolts are loaded in tension. Ever see the rear suspension on an old Mustang or Camaro ? The springs go under the rear end,so the u-bolts are loaded in tension. If the factory engineers were worried, they wouldn't do it that way. As long as the u-bolts are sized for the load, and in good condition,no problem.
I think you're on the right track now. I like the idea of the axle between the frame and springs. Definetly keep an eye on scrubline.
Just to be on the safe side I would have some new U bolts made before final installation, U- Bolts tend to stretch a little, especially if therye that old... Your doin alot more than I would attempt at 17, good luck!
I love it!!!! This build is going to rock you have to keep the duals. but maybe find some narrower tire for the front. Kick ***!!!!
I think you're on the right track. You definitly have the "wow" factor going. You have no money invested in it. Nothing to loose by trying different things. You'll need to rethink your rear suspension set up and keep thinking outside the box in solving your issues. What you are doing and going thru is really the heart and soul of hot rodding in it's early times. Good luck!
Yeah, even jeeps have the axle mounted over the spring, and many are used off road and beaten pretty hard, and you never hear of ubolts breaking, axle's break first.
I think it's an awesome concept! The only thing I would do is use NEW U-bolts! We were moving a step-van that had sat for a few years. My dad appied the brakes and the rear end stopped, but the truck didn't. Snapped the U-bolts on the rear end! This truck was a mid 70's and was always parked on concrete. My oppinion is; to be safe, always use new hardware on suspension components. Great looking truck!
