I'm trying to purchace a '39 ford truck (well, trade my bike for it) and I'm trying to find a decent value on it, and find some parts in case I get it. and I really cant find good info for a 39. The truck has bondo in places, but not too bad except the pass. rear fender, wich is statring to crack. It's baisicly stock, but it needs the stromburg 97 rebuilt, it smoked a little when he started it up, and ran kinda rough. it has rust in both door botoms, and something leaks (he did'nt know, but it looks like oil near the back) The paint is good for a driver but the body has a few dents, the interior was just redone and looks ok. So baisicly its a cool driver, that I can work on as I drive it, But it far from good looking. the trim down the center of the grill is really bad, so it needs a new one, and I'll probily have to do alot of work on the rear fender, or replace it. I can patch the door bottoms, and fix a few dents and dings. The bumpers are rough and painted over, but you can see the rust through them. Here is where it gets tricky, the dude wants $10,000 for it and I just cant justify paying that for it, but he likes my bike and told me to make him an offer. I say my bike is well worth $6,500 to $7,000, I'm thinking even trade. Do yall think that sounds fair? I know he might not like it, but that damn '39 aint made out of gold!
It's hard to evaluate something here, especially without photos; and a narrative of what's been done. But, generally, when it come to trucks, they're usually pretty "runout". I'm always in admiration of guys who restore trucks, for that very reason. The only thing you can do is go "stem to stern" (you've hit some of the cosmetics); and put a value on things that are serviceable, and those that need work. Go to suspension, engine, frame and drivetrain; and put a dollar figure on what it's going to take. Then go to the cosmetics. I think you're going to find (what you already know), that $10K for a "clapped out" old truck is pretty steep. It's be a different story, for example, if it were a "Deuce" roadster or coupe.
I sold this one last year for $11,500. The truck was super solid, virtually rust free, ran good, had a new '39 trans, gas tank and a really rare Hexagon Tool 2x2 intake. Ten grand for what you are describing is about $6,500 too much.
