  1. Old Cars and Old People and I don't think Old yet even though I'm past halfway through my 70's.
I was scheduled for surgery yesterday. It got bumped too tomorrow. That will be confirmed or moved again sometime today. I am ready to get this over with! Getting Old for people is much like an Old Car with high millage. U-Joints go bad, Wheel bearings need to be serviced, Cooling system needs attention (Oh my God my water works), Fuel system goes from High Octan and Alcohol to Un-Leded, Ign system becomes erratic. The vehicle wants to run hard and be useful like always but just can't without Major service. People getting Old are much the same, seems most of us spend way more time on the Trailer than we think we should but not much we can do without a little time in the Shop. Biggest problem we have is finding a Service Tec right for the Job and with good Job application, so we don't just end up the corner in the parking lot waiting for us to be convenient for them. Same story, different product. Ya, it's the same Crap Shoot making choices be it your prized project or yourself. No matter the choice it will always cost way more than the Quote and take longer than expected. I'm going to try and slow down a little as long as they get me firing on all 8 cyl's again. I still have a Shop full of personal project to get around to. Slower is better than not at all I guess but it Sucks!

Welcome to the club. My mind is still working 100 mph but the rest of me doesn't want to go along all the time. I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery.

Aging has it's challenges but it beats the alternative. We go from young cats checking out hip new joints to old dogs checking out new hip joints.

    Roger that!
There's a reason all three of my projects have so much dust on them, it's called ARTHRITIS.

Diminished capacity and a low flow rate aren't fun, but the thought of a leaking pipe is what worries me. Hoping the best for you.

Good luck PNB, you got this! I have had my fair share in the last few years, and I am 12 or 13 yrs younger than you! Hopefully I am good to go for awhile now, and you will be too! Hang in there!

  11. I often look back over Years of "can you fix this" projects of novias craftmanship both in Body Work as well as Welding issues that have come in through my doors. I then remember many story's coming home with my Retired Nurse Wife about Dr's and the term "Practicing Medicine". I and can see a direct parallel line between the Car world and the Medical world. It's all about hands on application and how much you care about your finished product. O.M.G!

I sent you a text buddy. I have always wanted to practice some medicine, if you want I can bring over my tools and give it a whirl. I have the cutting skin open part down pretty good, not sure about my stich work but I am pretty handy with epoxy and duct tape. You have a shop vac?

  13. Good luck with the upcoming surgery! As I remember (from my tonsillectomy about 70 years ago) there is a LAW on the books in Washington that they HAVE to give you ice cream after surgery (and if there isn't, there should be). Just sayin'...

i noticed years ago that doctors see a gold mine in older folks; lots of seemingly unneccessary "procedures." suddenly, that project car you've been neglecting acquires a sense of urgency...

    I understand the frustration.

The doctors have worked on me more the last 2 years than I've worked on my projects.

This is the latest. Foot surgery.
Like you, can't wait to get past this stuff. I've got things to do.
I just graduated to a cast. Already can't wait to get the damn thing off.
    Gotta mostly sit.
So I guess I'll sit and sand parts.

You guys just wait and see what happens after I get my legs under me again.
    S.O.B.
    LOL

    Good luck, P&B!

  19. You know, I remember selling you that "Pile" you built the 40 into. Now that is Talent and a Quality finish. I'd probably be in just as good hands letting you have a run at this little deal. I don't mind a little scarring, you've seen some of my real narrly ones that cost me a ton back then. Is there a Buddy deal? And yes, I have a 5 horse Shop Vacc.

That's a for sure deal and some of my Old Ink makes them aware there could be a large cost for a Fuck Up. The Surgeon already knows I don't have much of a sense of humor. I do however have a lot of faith in him. He and I are no strangers.

  21. I had esophageal cancer three years ago. They took a fist-sized tumor out, including the top of my stomach and bottom of my esophagus, then pulled together what was left. They chased surgery with chemotherapy and radiation therapy to make sure nothing came back. Three years later, no cancer. Right after chemo/radiation, I had kidney stones blasted, then had shingles as I recovered. It was 2020, the year of covid, which I avoided. All of that convinced me to accelerate the '29AA truck project I've been working on since 1974. Rebuilt the 351W engine last year, and the AOD transmission this year. I'm kinda short on money right now, waiting until fall when I go back to work part time as a substitute teacher. Maybe by this time next year, in the 50th year of my project, it will be running and rolling (probably not titled and licensed). That's the general goal, but each time I go to the garage and work on it, I acknowledge how fortunate I am to be not just alive but still active, able to do this stuff. WHAT AN UNEXPECTED GIFT!

  24. PnB, Best to you with the challenge you’re facing. Sounds like you have a realistic and positive attitude about it and that’s a large part of what it takes. I have a friend who has lived long and well. His mantra is, “I may F*CK up, but I’ll NEVER GIVE UP.” Never Give Up!!

PNB, you got this. Working in the medical field and playing with cars, I can see the similarities. What I do know is that something bigger than I am seems to always make sure everything works out the way it is suppose to.

  27. A very funny yet accurate comparison.
    Wishing you the best.

Mike, we have had many conversations about this and at this stage of the game we are fortunate to still be able to do what we do....everything is a trade off. You know that I am not far away and if you need anything just a call or a text is all it takes, you got this Pal!

I just bought another last car, in my 70's and told the wife my Sport Coupe was my last car. All done except the interior and it goes in for that next week and I found myself sitting in the recliner too much. Bought a car off the internet and it's a little rougher than I had hoped but no huge problems. A 1929 roadster pickup, thinking a warmed over four banger and Hot Rod Flatz, started over on the electrical system, rebuilding the distributor and steering box now. 29rp1.jpeg
