  2. I'm putting off having a hip looked at, most days I deal with it. I have a left thumb joint that needs to be cleaned out, that I broke 2x in my youth. My right pinky I bent back too far last year, that locks and has to be released with my left hand. Then there is back pain... no fun. Dreading doing certain things is WORSE than not doing them. At the end of the day, I'm glad I powered through them.

  3. Thanks Marty. Both you and Gary (saltracre219) have been long time friends. Bandit Billy is a newby but earned his keep. It's a great feeling having Friends like the 3 of ya and knowing it's genuine. Ther's a big difference between Friends and just people we know. Hope this goes as well as the last one, if so I still may get to Smoke the Tires on my 40 project before the rains set back in. That's my new goal.

  4. I don’t think much either

I’ve been hampered with a back muscle issue the past week. slowed down a bit.
    Sucks.
Hands hurt. I guess hitting cars with hammers has a few side effects.

    we’re still hammering

    hang in there.

During the crazy pandemic I was building my '39 Chev coupe, and dealing with a bad gall bladder, and a bad hernia. Doctors refused to fix either so I every so often had to stuff my intestines back inside my stomach wall, and just deal with the agony of the gall bladder. They finally fixed both in two operations two weeks apart, and I was out in the shop a few days later!
I too am in my 70's, and I can easily gauge what I do today vs. what I did on my cars 10-15 years ago! It doesn't even come close, as I used to work on cars 60-70 hrs. a week, and now it's maybe half that on a good week! But I still enjoy it, and beyond whatever aches and pains I have, it's still better than being below ground!

After my heart surgery I just went out to the shop, turned on the lights and the music, sat down and enjoyed the sights, smells and looked through old magazines. Pretty soon I was sitting at the workbench and tinkering with carburetors. Next thing you know I was cutting and welding and stuff.
It's a pretty strong addiction, this car stuff. You'll be back at it in no time.

  9. Getting old is kinda like a drag race where you are ready to go and start off blazing, but only have 1st gear and it all fizzles out when you float the valves.

Hi Pist-n-broke, I hope this helps, I went through open heart surgery on 25th April (a double bypass and valve repair) so I,m officially a member of the zipper club lol.
Just take your time recovering and DONT lift anything heavier than a coffee cup for at least six weeks.
Try to walk a mile a day when you feel up to it.
If you give your body time to heal you should be fine.
    Good luck with your surgery.

At 73, everything still pretty much works, just not on the same day.

  15. Well.
We do slow down. I’m not as fast as I was in my 20s but I’m much smarter. I don’t have to move as much

    life is crazy like that.

I had quadruple bypass Feb 17. Within a couple of weeks i was out in the shop observing Trevorsworth working on his car on Sundays, and all week long i was sorting through piles of tools, putting little things where they belonged. It didn't take a lot to let me know when I was doing something that should wait for help with. Pretty soon I was back to doing most regular things.

Point is: just listen to what your body is telling you and not what your 20 yr old invincible mind is telling you!

  19. The hits keep on coming. I was diagnosed yesterday with a-fib and need an ablation done. I have had it for many years and the heart doc was not overly concerned until my heart did it for him in the office. The EKG was clean and my heart rate settled down quickly. This will be a piece of cake compared to the triple bypass of 2016.

  20. As a good friend of mine says, "This getting old is not for sissies!" And I think he's correct. I'm a stage IV cancer survivor and I wouldn't wish that crap on my worst enemy. I remind myself each day when I wake up to smile because I have one more chance to do the things I love to do. :D

Good luck with your upcoming procedures.

My dad had a twisted sense of humor his favorite sign is the one front and center above his work bench. After selling the shop property downtown that we had been in for 62 years I moved his workbench and signs to my home garage where I run the shop now.

Sorry to hear all of these stories. I don't know how many "someday" projects I have in and out of the house. But I think at the very least we have to consider that maybe in some way those projects kept you going and active a little longer than if we didn't have them.

Even as the entire world hurries forward in their never-ending quest for something new...

... the old man is alone in his shop
working on something even older than he
    quietly, diligently, deliberately
    slowing the passage of time.

  26. I dont consider moving slow as big as a negative as I once did.

it’s the moving part that counts.

the speed of movement isn’t as important.

    just keep hammering

  30. I have a consultation coming up on August 21st... something to look forward to. The trick is not to give up and let life pass us by. I've been working on the Ford and giving some friends a hand. I had a 60 lb Ford center section up on the Bridgeport last week.
