Got a pair of Cougar SST piecrust slicks today. H70-14 Says they replace 8.55-14 The tread width is 7". One side has a white line and the other has a red line. Each slick has a slightly raised strip of rubber in the center which make them look like they've never been run. They are recaps but they have now weather checking and seem to be in great shape. Anybody heard of these before? Who made Couger's? How old are they?
post a pic. i had a pair of 15" Hoosier wide white recapped slicks (piecrust) with a date on them from Hoosier that said 1964. i sold em to a buddy.
Hey Kerry is Cougar the only name on the sidewall? Ive been looking through old mags trying to find even ads on cougar tires, no go.
H70-14 Says they replace 8.55-14 ...........that info should be a good clue on the age. I got my license in 1970 and I remember the change over to using letters in place of numbers. I'd say late 60's vintage for my guess. I love the old slicks just don't know if I dare go fast with them! I'll do 0-50mph with any tire but after that I get chicken. Steve
Cougar SST is the only name on them. They do say "2 Fiber Glass + 2 Polyester Plies" "4 Ply Tread 2 Ply Sidewalls". From what the guy I got them from said and from the other references I was guessing 1968, but 1970 might be closer. When did they switch from the piecrust hard slicks to the wrinklewall? Not sure I'll ever use these but they were to cheap and to cool to let them just sit there. Maybe I can barter them to somebody on some 14x6 torque thrusts to match the ones I have for the rear.
Sounds like a recap on a generic tire wharehouse discounter carcass. My 68 Impala had the G78-14 as part of the SS package wheras the 7.50-14 was standard on the basic Impala. Looking thru the Chev musclecar book 1967 appears to be the first year the letter series was offered. I dont know if the Corvette or other makers had them earlier.
