I think I fried my MOON tach - any hope?

I had just replaced the off-brand gauges a PO installed with a trio of vintage-style MOON gauges. I was in a bit of a rush, didn't pay attention to how I connected the hot lead to the + side of the voltmeter. Went to crank it over, hot wire from the ballast resistor to the gauge (12 volts) started smoking. The tach picks up power from the gauge (I think), as it doesn't work now after fixing the shorted connection. Tach looks fairly new, vintage-style like a old Sun unit. Haven't pulled it out yet for a look-see - thought I would ask here if there is a fuseable link or something inside I can fix myself to get it back up.

A new tach is only $70, so its not worth taking in to a shop for a pro-touch. I've never opened one up, can anyone offer any help here? Car is a '57 Chevy 150 Utility Sedan (business coupe) Black Widow tribute car, 283 Fuelie.

    MUCHO Thanks, Tim

The new Moon tachs are total ****. Not worth buying. I bought one and let it sit on the shelf for about a year before I got around to putting it on. Hooked it up and it did not work, brand new. I had it too long to get a refund and found out lots of people have had problems with them being pure junk. If yours is one of the newer made in China tachs then it probably would not have worked long even if it was hooked up right. Try another brand.

Well, I'll see what I can do to open it up for a look. I don't know how long the PO had it in the car, but it seemed to work OK until I shorted the wire out. Thanks guys, for the links - I'm not holding out for much...

If I have to ****can it, well that will be the price I paid for putting the decals on the wing windows BEFORE getting the gauges installed. Lesson learned! <label for="rb_iconid_9">[IMG]</label>

Are the vintage-style tachs from Jeg's, Summit or Speedway any better, or do they ride over on the same rice boat?

    MUCHO Thanks, Tim

Toss it in the nearest dumpster and go get yourself a vintage Sun Tach.

Went cheap and bought a brand new Moon Eyes tach for $65 off eBay two years ago for my 62 Chevy wagon. I must have lucked out as it still does everything a tach can do. At the time I couldn't justify spending over $200 for a vintage Sun.
