Great link ELpolacko. Murphy's even has the roller rockers for the SV series IH engine (283/304/345/392) and the slant 4s.

Perhaps you don't need more power (right now). Maybe what you need is more speed. Your truck is geared very low, as others have said.

As an illustration, imagine if you could only drive your truck in 1st gear. The engine would turn very fast, but the wheels would turn very slow. Even if you floored the gas pedal, you just aren't going to go fast. It is, however, excellent for pulling a very heavy trailer up a steep hill. Nothing can stop it - it's like a bulldozer. Your truck was made to do that kind of work. But you don't want a bulldozer or a farm truck, you want something that will go fast - like a car.

So, imagine you now shift your truck into second gear. The engine is still turning at the same speed as it did in 1st gear, but now the wheels are turning a little faster. The engine has the same power as it did in first gear, but the gearing is different so you are going a little faster.

Now let's put your truck in top gear with the pedal floored. You can keep up with traffic, but your engine is really screaming and you still aren't going really, really fast. If only you had one more gear you could shift into...

If you swap your truck's rear end to a higher-geared rear end, it will be like moving all the gears up a notch. 1st gear will now act like 2nd gear used to. 2nd gear will act like 3rd. Top gear will also be moved up a notch, just like all the other gears. Putting a higher-geared rear end in your truck will give you that extra gear that you wanted to shift into when you had your truck floored and were just barely keeping up with the other cars on the freeway. Unfortunately, you will loose the "bulldozer low" gear. But you didn't use that much anyway.

Most rear ends are not very expensive in junk yards. That's where I would spend my limited money first if I owned your truck. Later on, when I've saved a few more dollars, only then would I add more power to the engine. A more powerful engine will not make your "bulldozer" go any faster right now because, with that rear end, it's like it's stuck in a lower gear.

You have a low rev'ing, torquey engine. It should have no trouble with more gear in the rear. This will allow the power your engine does have to be put to better use at higher speeds instead of at the "nothing-can-stop-a-bulldozer" speeds.

As a bonus, you'll get better gas mileage so you can save for speed parts or a different engine or what ever else you decide.

Check out this video. Even though the tractor has thousands of horse power, it still can't get up to freeway speeds because it is geared so low. If you add more power to your truck's engine before swapping out the rear end, you'll have the same "problem."

    Good luck!
