Thats all .. Just like to use my pickup or wagon to push one sometime .. be fun to be part of the parade or cacklefest, etc. If anyone needs a shove sometime, let me know ..
Steve Gibbs runs the NHRA cacklefests at Pomona and elsewhere. He's generally looking for period push trucks when there's going to be an event. Try contacting him through the NHRA Museum in Pomona.
I will have the Gizzle Hopper AA/Fuel Coupe at Bakersfield (CHHR) this year and could use a period push car. My 2004 F-150 does not get it. Wanna join the fun, be at Bakersfield. I also need some pit help.
I seen 100's of them doing it during the "period" .. Note, this "period" correct picture .. Don't think you need much more proof then that
That's a very fine looking Dodge. If you were to show up at most any nostalgia event, rigged with a nice safe push board , I don't think you would have much trouble getting a gig. Yeah, I remember Garlits pulling in with an old black Dodge pickup and open trailer as late as about 1970. I also remember his crew as bunch of rough lookin' cats that you would hate to come across in a dark alley. Nothing pretty going on with this race team, but they sure got down to business.
Yeah there have always been trucks pushing them but none of them were dropped and had torgue thrusts on them. Ur truck is nice though Rusty
Maybe none were "in the weeds" as much as Big Dad's D100 ... but I'd argue that they very well could have been running Torq-Thrust rims (albeit not on radials) ... American Racing made the first 5 spokes in 1956 ...
Chris Rice here in Prince Edward County Ontario has 4 of those style trucks.I received a free slant six from him saturday and got the tour. They are a nice style truck for sure. He has two builders ,( one in drivable condition ) and two parts trucks. He said he is always looking for more parts and rust free body parts. Pushing a FED It was 1969, Mohawk Dragway on the Tyendinaga Reserve. It was the last big meet held there. Garlits was there as was Cha cha Muldooney but with her early gas chevy rail. I was friends with the guys who were running the track then, Bill Lawson and Can Am car builder Roy Hayman. Bill called me and my friend Steve Beer over and said take "Toby" (the shop tow truck) over to Garlits. He wants a push start. He wants two of you. I rode shotgun and Steve drove. Big Daddy lectured us a couple of times how when the car fires we were not to let up at all but keep pushing full tilt till he drove cleanly away. The truck was an old Cab over Fargo that had been made into a tow truck complete with push board. It was an exciting experience. I watched while Steve drove. Even though the truck was a V8 it was all it could do to maintain speed when Garlits got ready to fire. You could hear the truck carb wheesing as Steve had his foot on the floor. Garlits went to fire and the truck bogged down real hard for a second as the big Chrysler caught and coughed and then roared to life as he drove away. Twas fun. Shirly Cha cha blew a rear diff that day but the natives had rolled an old chevy at the end of the old runway and it donated a pot with gears so she could finish the day. She had a 55-57 Chevy rear end in the little gas rail. No one ever knew or guessed that day how famous she would become. I think she was pretty young then too although i dont now her age. Rini brothers were also there with their fueler and also Dick Gaylord from Syracuse with a BB/FD using a small block blown chevy.
My uncle bought one new back in the day, and thats why I built mine and the day he brought it home ..It had cragars on it It was not odd at all to see that era pickup or Mopar wagons pushing FEDS or pulling funny's either I have this as well, it would like to shove one too
I thought this thread was about hand pushing back to the line after the burnout. I'll tell ya nothing like sucking Nitro mix down your lungs, eyes shut till you feel the brake and your shoes about to come off from the VHT on the track, those were some good times.
My dad said the first time he ever noticed a hot rod truck, was Gene Snow's then-new silver Dodge tow rig with Cragar SS wheels. He couldn't believe how cool it was. This must have been around '66-67.
Get in touch with these guys...they have races mostly around DFW, Houston, Oklahoma, etc. They might be able to use a push truck. http://www.southwestjrfuelers.com/
That truck's not traditional. Yeah, right. Mousy Marcellius still pulls the Winged Express with one that has a gazzillion miles on it. You take that to a nostalgia event and find a Mopar powered car to push and you'll be heroic.
