I'm working on a So-What style AD chevy truck on S10 ch***is. I'm having a hard time deciding between using an inline 6 or going with a sbc or other GM V8. I have a rebuilt 235 I6 (stock) and an S10 5 speed but am thinking I might want to go V8/auto for ease of getting parts and plenty of power. Any suggestions?? Orange52
I had the same decision to make, I have a 51 chevy sedan and I have a 216, 235 and a 350. I wanted to put the 235 in it, I love the sound with headers and the look with dual carbs. But mine has a spun bearing and needs a rebuild. That is a bit of $$, plus my car will be a daily summer driver so I am putting the 350 in for the parts issue. If your going to do the daily/highway thing then go with the V-8 if it's a weekend warrior go with the 235 (or give it to me
compared to other engines, speed and replacement parts are pretty plentiful for the I-6, if you go with the SBC be sure you do it right, but a big j2 olds would probably look *****in between those frame rails
If I keep the I6, I'll have to do a search for the HAMBer that makes 4/2 split exhaust manifolds. An Olds or Caddy motor would be cool, but probably out of my price range.
Most part stores seem to have 235 parts on the shelf or can get them the next day. Not really a problem. Crestliner on the HAMB splits inline manifolds and does nice work
Thanks for the info on Crestliner, if I go with the I6 I'll get in touch with him. Not to sidetrack my own post to much but, how hard is it to connect an automatic trans to a 235? Cost?
S10 ch***is? 2.8 V6...the only way to fly! (Well, not FLY, exactly...but kinda motor along with traffic anyway!) Best part...factory mounts and aftermarket headers work cuz s10s came with them motors!
some 235's came with Powerglides... so I know a cast and maybe an aluminum Powerglide will bolt right up. If you're talking TH350... I'm sure it can be done and adapters exist, but I don't know about cost
I got a 235 in my Impala. Clifford high performance and stovebolt engine co. are your best bet for parts. I want to do the 3 singles and headers on mine, but it aint exactly cheap. I don't know if this will help but when i had hydraulic lifters in it, they knocked like hell. I ditched them for some mechanicals. I went the cheap route on the ignition and bought an electronic convertion kit called the ignitor, it works like a champ. Good luck with the six.
Fat Hack, My donor 10 has a 2.8/auto combo but its really tired. If I thought it would be reliable I'd probably leave it alone.

[/ QUOTE ] Just remember the bottom end on the 2.8 is weak and they cost about half again as much to rebuild as a 350
how about a inline 5 cyl out of the Colorado truck?..haha......just go with the inline 6..not the 216 tho...but 235 or 261 are dope... everyone has that tired old 350/350 combo. i mean its a great engine and all but when i go to car shows the inliners always attract my eyes
4.3 is a much better engine than the 2.8. Otherwise do the sbc! It fits great too. As my grampa used to say, the 2.8 couldn't pull the tail out of a rotten cat...

[/ QUOTE ] your granmpa makes me laugh!!!! my pops ran his 2.8 to 250K + before it puked a head gasket, slow as ****, but it did tow a few 66 impalas around, and graded his 2.5 acre lot, long story, but not the worst mill. As far as the question 6 or 8..... STOVEBOLT's the only way to fly, I don't have any problems getting parts, and i can't beleive how many people compliment the idea of not having a V8!
Stick with the 6. I've got the original 194 6 in my 63 chevy duece and the only swap i would consider is a 250 I6. Stovebolt Engine Co. is the way to go, give them a call and they have almost anything you would need for a inline. Also you can check www.inliners.org, those guys are tons of help when it comes to I6 mods.

REAL high cool factor
I run a 250 in mine with a 200R4 ******. Most folks are surprised it's only a six banger. Runs like a scalded dog.
[ QUOTE ] The 235 with a 4/2 split exhaust, dual carbs, and an overdrive sounds like the way to go! [/ QUOTE ] Damn it! Does anybody have a horsepower reading on this set-up? I know 235 has like 135hp stock... Does Crestliner have mani's on hand or does he need the one of your ride?
I don't know Crestliner or any numbers on that set up, but I make 6 cylinder headers. I've got a pattern for a 235, too. PM me

PM me [/ QUOTE ] Dood, those ar pretty sweet. i had thought about making my own as well, but decided to find the speed parts i needed after the "appropriations commity" (aka da wife) said she wanted it to look "human"...lol i prefer the traditional home built look, but what the heck.
