Question- are there any particular qualifications necessary to join the "Volunteer Traditional Rod & Custom Police Force" other than a keyboard and free time? Shouldn't there at least be a requirement that you have built at least one socially accepted said Traditional Rod or Custom?

And the "this is the problem today" posts don't hold much water because there have been ugly cars for 100 YEARS! Beauty and Ugly will ALWAYS co-exist- get over it.

I shared this last little bit earlier in a PM to KIRK! pertaining to Real world vs. Internet. My son was recently attacked by some kids at high school because they were upset with his group from X-box Live gaming and some things said from one group to the other. The biggest one blindsided my son and football tackled him on to concrete. He ended up with a concussion to the back of his head- police, lawyers and the attackers getting expelled following. Just because it starts on a keyboard doesn't mean it ends there.

    well put.
same thing happened during the 70's with hotrodding... it was so over the top and silly just like the music and clothing, but hotrodding in *our* traditional sense was alive and well.

edit - jim... no, i dont think it is necessary to have built a traditionaly acceptable car to be taken seriously. build skill isn't questioned, asthetics on the other hand is.

Kinda looks like 54 Buick side trim, I'm not really sure though because the video quality is really bad.

Judging from some of the other shhhhhtuff he's built... i'm betting he had nothing to do with the paint job on that car. It's just too nice!

Never has there been a time where the "ugly" cars are prevailing over the "pretty cars." And the only reason that this is the case now, is because the concept of building a side show car is really easy to grasp. It doesn't help matters any, that there's a huge market that exists to sell these *****s all the parts they need to shock their buddies at the local burger king cruise night.

It's basically, lowering the bar so everyone can play along.

  7. Jeesus, Jim, sorry about yer kid but get him off the gaming and into the shop! Or teach him how to take a punch and kick ***. Lawyers? You ARE the problem.

  8. And this ****s cars? JohnnyCola is my new Prophet. That custom is the ugliest POS I have ever seen, I feel sorry for the guy that had to make it straight.

Ive lived and worked near Ian's shops for a few years and watched his business grow at the same time he builds his own projects. While I know most the people here dont agree with his taste for all his projects, I have seen him build a couple things in the past that in my opinion were pretty tasteful and had some traditional influence to them. I have also seen that shoebox in different stages and to make one thing clear he didnt take a unmolested 2 door coupe or sedan for that project it was a 4 door that needed alot of work to begin with. My opinion on the shoebox its definately different but of course not how I would build it, I like really like the paint though.

My son has taken karate and boxing, but when a 175 pound footballer tackles a 100 pound kid out of no where and bounces his head off the pavement there's really no chance of fighting back. Lawyers aren't my idea- but the school is covering their *** and using them as their mouth piece- I don't have one. And just in case I don't get one are you going to help with the medial bills? Thanks, "The Problem"
My son just happened to be the smallest in his group and the one that "tough guy" picked out of his group to take out his aggression on- he wasn't even the one that said the things that pissed the kid off. Thanks again for your concern.

Holy cow! What a bunch of haters there are on here... If karma is real there is much of it floating around here. As for customs most of Barris's stuf was ugly if you ask me but I respect the man's abilities. Half you guys couldn't build anything near what Ian can, and yet you talk so much smack...

And they also double for the exhaust !!!

    JEEEEEEEZZUUUUUSSSS !
Is this the H.A.M.B. or the 'OL STOOL RODZ Board.. hard to tell at times.

    Rat Rods.
    Video Games.
    Bully driven concussions.
    Lawyers.
    Drama.

If the HAMB is getting good at deleting threads, i'd choose this one...

Some things are meant to be left to the imagination and left there....... period!!!!!!! KNUX!

And I thank the good lord every second that I can't... :)

Comedian Ron White said "I had the right to remain silent, but I didn't have the ability."

That's kinda like what is going on with this car...

We all can't be Sam Barris or the Alexander Bros. I won't mention any names, but even in the 50s and 60s there were more than a few big name customizers that missed the mark more often than not.
I'm a strong proponet of the concept that a traditional car is one engineered and built by the owner with parts and materials chosen to achieve something unique and different (can we say better) than what was started with, and while some people NEVER get it, it certainly wouldn't hurt this guy to take a few art cl***es and learn a little purity of line and form.

    Great points...

Specifically that the idea of a hot rod or custom is to IMPROVE the car, not just change it for the sake of change. Yes, the latter has happened MANY times in history, and by great builders. That still doesn't make it OK or cool today. Learn from the past, don't just repeat it. Are you listening rat rodders and OSR magazine?

Secondly, many, including the builder, keep talking about "art". Well, I have been a professional artist/designer since I was 17 (that's 21 years ago), so I feel like I have a fairly good eye and can confidently speak to design. I have seen many cars that I don't personally like, but were well-designed. The ones shown here are not. Just slapping stuff together (no matter how nicely you shine it up after) is not art nor design, it's just slapping **** together. There is no beauty of line or proportion, just radical **** slapped together with no regard for how one detail affects the next.
