Speed Gems: I just thought that it would be good to see other versions of these same cars when they were configured differently. The Eddie Bosio version looks nothing close to the Edelbrock version. The Bill Breece '32 three window has been replicated but the original one is totally different. Just another dimension for this thread.

    Hello,

The history of the Sadd, Teague, Bentley Modified Roadster goes back to 1964. It has a sad…pun intended, story that get brighter with the new build from another historic roadster. This yellow version was done as a tribute to the good looking original build and team, plus the hearse push car, was a classic, too.

I feel that sometimes things get lost when iconic cars are restored to their "original" versions. I prefer the Dick Scritchfield car to the Bob McGee and the Bill Rolland car to the Tommy Ivo version. The Hy Rosen version done by Barris, I could do without.

I've changed the title of this thread Because that's more of what it's really about, iconic cars from hot rodding's past that have survived and been restored.

    Hello,

Yes, that is the Panella Brothers Willys Pickup in an earlier stage, but in drag racing history, that truck can go back to 1959-60 with the Al Dal Porto Willys Truck in it A/Gas Class record setting ways.
    upload_2022-10-7_4-20-48.png
The history of the Al Dal Porto Willys pickup was that it won the A/Gas division in 1959 as per Drag News weekly.
    upload_2022-10-7_4-25-49.png
“Another gasser that had an early influence on Joe was the Al Dal Porto Yellow Willys Pickup that was later bought by the Panella Brothers and became their Candy Apple Red pickup. Al was a lakes racer and built this Pickup to go drag racing. He won the A/Gas Coupe Sedan class in it at the Smokers Meet (March Meet) in it, in 1959. It turned 114.94 Mph with a Chevy engine.”

We saw it in its Yellow paint stage as photographed nicely by Geri Tarvin from 1959. So, the comparison can go back a few more years to see the start of the Panella Brothers truck when it was owned by Al Dal Porto.

Car show fan Jim "Street" Skonzakes of Dayton, Ohio, purchased the Kookie T in 1959 for $3,000. It immediately went to Larry Watson for a cosmetic redo where it was repainted in a Rose Pearl with Candy Red flames tipped in black along with white pinstriping. The interior upholstery also got a redo, now sporting a white pearl button-tufted stitching.

    upload_2022-11-1_3-59-2.png Ewell, Stecker, Kamboor FED

    Hello,

We have known Jack Ewell since the old days of drag racing at Lion’s Dragstrip. He was the shop manager at Mickey Thompson’s Shop(s) near our house. There were three versions of the shop. Just type in Jack Ewell in the HAMB search and there will be some very early history from coupes to dragsters in his repertoire. When we showed the shop our 671 SBC Willys Coupe, the guys there were impressed that a couple of teenagers could do what we tried and it ran hard. They saw it at Lion's Dragstrip all Summer.
    upload_2022-11-1_4-0-13.png
    1961-62

The trio of Jack Ewell, Bill Stecker and Jim Kamboor make/made quite a team.

“Jack Ewell and Bill Stecker out of San Pedro, CA. They went on to run a series of Top Fuel cars in partnership with James Kamboor in later years.”

This is my take as a tribute to the sleek, Black FED race car that ran in 1961-62 season. Also, the reinvented Orange color FED in 1964. The latest recreation was on display at the 2019 version of the Lion’s Dragstrip museum, in front of the yellow, upper crosswalk/ timing tower from the those years.

    Jnaki

Since the Halloween month has passed last night, the Orange/Black FED from 1961-64 still fits. The Friday Art Halloween October artwork scheme of Orange/Black or whatever color and design showcased, all month. “Orange is the new Black” from a streaming series that fits the month of October/November FALL colors, well.

    Hello,

upload_2023-1-1_4-22-1.png 1959 Lions Dragstrip Staging Lanes
We have followed the escapades of the local So Cal group, Ratican, Jackson, Stearns group from the time we first saw them at Lion’s Dragstrip during our early days. We knew they were sponsored by our favorite speed shop, Reath Automotive. When, Reath was still in the old store on 10th and Cherry Ave.

That race car photo is the first black and white that I have seen since I filmed them at Lions Dragstrip in 1959-60 era. Ron Stearns told me that this configuration was the longer chassis version. By the time they had a new shorter chassis, they later, traveled back to the Indy Nationals in 1961 for their record breaking event.

I filmed them at Lions from the first time I saw that Altered. Then we went to the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960 and they had a great run all the way to the race against the Boudakian Bros Fiat Altered.

The engine was a 1957 Olds 394 CI, built up to about 420 CI.

Even though, they were Lions Dragstrip and So Cal locals, we saw them race at the 2nd annual, Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960.

The Ron Bizio Truck, looked a fright, with it's Psychedelic paint from the 70's, when it arrived at my door in early 1986. The blown 392 Chrysler was replaced with a big inch B Mopar with dual Holley 4500 carburetors. The pics are before, it's sad time, rebuilding, and back on the track. I would bet it has longer life span racing, than any other A/GS ever raced.
    All thanks to the late Tom Willford ! Bizio 40.jpg Bizio 1.jpg 2013-04-02 201454.jpg 2013-04-02 201651.jpg Willys Bizio Marty a.jpg Bizio11.jpg

    Bustle Bomb
    upload_2023-1-26_3-5-53.png

    Hello,

We have always seen photos and read countless stories about the famous “Bustle Bomb.” Our introduction to the word Bustle is for a rear end on a person, namely an entertainer. The modern quote plays into this ever wondering mind… “does the motor make my butt too big?” Well, yes!!

But, (pun not intended) it gave early racers something to wonder about the extra power of another motor, put somewhere. In this case, behind the rear axle and driver.

So, those stories were amazing as to what the Bustle Bomb could and did actually do at the drag strips.
    upload_2023-1-26_3-7-14.png

On August 20, 1955, Scotty drove Bustle Bomb to 151.07 mph, setting the world speed record in the quarter-mile. But more importantly, that speed shattered the glass ceiling many believed prevented a car from achieving 150 mph within a quarter-mile.

Then in a July 13, 1956, entry, Drag News announced the reappearance of the Bustle Bomb at the third-annual ATAA World Series at Lawrenceville on August, 1956. The car boasted a bunch of new features like the 1942 Packard transmission for the front engine. Timney also machined quick-change housings for both pinions. Gone were the Olds and Caddy, in their place Howard's 296ci Chevrolets with chain drive McCulloch superchargers. Also gone was the battery and starter. But the most visible change was a fiberglass Meteor SR1 sports-car body. The car had emerged several hundred pounds lighter

The blown Chevrolets overpowered the swing-axle suspension and the body generated lift. A guardrail collision sidelined the car before eliminations. The team returned the engines to Johansen and the Bustle Bomb sat.
    upload_2023-1-26_3-8-24.png

So, what happened to the history of the streamlined sporty car body on a similar build from the same team? A dragster copy is at the Garlits Museum, but, where is the smooth sporty car build?
