Okay guys, I have a '28 Dodge driver-quality car and am looking for an alternative to the expensive custom running board trim. My car is not show-quality and I am making new ones. Has anyone found an inexpensive or reasonable source for an aluminum square edge for an antique car? Gotta be a cheap version somewhere? Thanks, Jim
We pulled some white boards out at the school one time. They had some interesting extruded aluminum edging on them. Something like that or a big industrial poster board border might work.
Sounds interesting- got any pics? Okay, off to the junkyard maybe. Or see if anyone has used a generic edge from Menards or Home Depot? Thanks- Jim
I don't know how long the boards are but the early VW bugs have nice stainless running board trim and is not expensive. HRP
yup, that's what i was picturing in my head. the early vw is much thicker than the 70's stuff. stainless or aluminum can't remember. you gotta browse a bit, you could find something cooler, remember you don't have to only look on running boards.
I had a sheet metal shop bend stainless edges for my Avatar Dodge, certainly could have bent aluminum
Years ago we could get an aluminum extrusion edging for use on camper trailers. It was an angle iron shape used on top as a cap to cover the edge between the horizontal roofing material and the vertical sides. I used it for trim on my home made ElCamino bed cover which was not thicker than a running board. Try a camper supply.
Bullnose carpet edging might work, it's aluminum and ribbed, pretty generic looking, I used the flat kind to make the edge of my countertop in my kitchen. Big long sticks of it are like $15 at a home store and I doubt the design has changed in 50 years. Maybe not ideal, but it would work.
Here's a place to check out. Not exactly Cheap but they have some nice choices. Click on link below http://www.restorationstuff.com/featured8.html
I ended up ordering two lengths of 6' aluminum edging from McMaster Carr and they came the next day- perfect at $12 per 6' length. Nice!
Thanks Fozz71 for posting your conclusion. There are so many dead end threads at times, glad you found something.
