been looking at all kinds of air cleaners and cant come up with any thing cool that will not choke off the motor besides a set of stacks. 10" is the max od before they hit each other. right now the motor has finned vette valve covers with spacers to clear the shaft rockers, polished water pump and magneato. what have you seen??? ideas??? pictures????
Hey dude....want somethig really killer? Put on those 8 or 10"ers you got.....just with the baseplates on.....get you a piece of 1/8" aluminum flat plate, scribe a piece out going arount each base and a straight line intersecting the OD's,..............so it looks like a big oval. Cut this piece out..........plus another one for the top. Before you start this next step.....put some tape over your carbs throats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bottom one c-clamp to the bases and drill 3 to 4 10-32 clearence holes for br*** screws and nuts....do this on both bases. Now, undo the screws that go onto the mounting neck, flip this over cut out your holes for your airflow. Now, put your 2 small aircleaners on, and lay the 2nd alum. plate on top, aligning it up and tracing around your air cleaners and do the connecting line thing. Mark your 2 holes where your holddown studs will come thru at. Cut it out, put the 2 drilled holes in ( do this OFF the carbs please) for your holddown studs..........now put on your 2 little chrome top covers on.........put your alum. plate on...........now if you want.....you can polish the aluminum up really bright........even put 3 or 4 10-32 br*** screws thru the lid to hold the chrome tops in a ***embly.......but the chrome, polished aluminum and br*** really make for a nice visual statement! Happy Roddin'.............
check out how the manufacturers did it in the 60's...each of them had pretty cool stuff on their super stock and trans am cars....
Small and round I think look the best. The early Plymouth had the best I think Ive ever seen, thier kinda oval looking.
I always wanted to siamese a vintage set of air cleaners for my cross ram - never got around to it, but I still wonder if it'd look pretty cool.
I dont know - I have a Weiand manifold and my carbs sit side by side-not staggered with one forward and one back like the Edelbrock and Offenhauser i am trying to find/decide what to do also-thinking of velocity stacks
the scott style looks great but fitting a filter will kill the look i think. the one i have is a straight across weiand
Well, don't tell any of the professional billet police here, but they are Billet Specialty with the original breathers that come with these air cleaners. Actually the breathers themselves have been replaced multiple times and are a standard part number available at Autozone or Pepboys. Here is a link. http://www.billetspecialties.com/subcategory.asp?cid=1 They are not inexpensive, but I think they look pretty good with the '65 Vette valve covers and the '61 Offy cross ram and the finish on them is beautiful. I was always going to paint the fins red, but never got around to it. Not sure if I want to now or not...
Slag, How bought hammerforming a custom oval shaped filter housing similar to this factory Mopar one... imagine it a little smoother looking: This one's a similar idea on a Ford 312. Again you'll have to use your imagination to clean it up a little. Here's a link to some oval shaped K&N filters. You can punch the K&N p/n into Summit's website and get a price. And here's a link to Mopar's factory dual quad air cleaners... mostly muscle car, but there's some older stuff mixed in.
A pair of oval air cleaners from a HEMI in one of the early 300 letter cars would be the cat's meow. Current cost and availability will probably make you think they are made of unobtainium right now, but maybe it would be possible to clone them depending on your skill set and determination.
The Nicsons are gorgeous. So are the Cal Customs and the Sharks. ALL personal favorites. Nice detail on the gold engine, very nice.

Bought a bbc crossram at the Long Beach swap years ago and it came with two of these scoops. One was taller than the other. Wish I still had it...never seen another one.
