Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Nov 2, 2011.

  1. On the rear deck at back window : What would be cool to make into a Brake Light-Turn Signal unit?

    * I've seen: Heads/ Skulls etc used. What else ???

Any suggestions what I can create/Fabricate that I'll install lights in to ?

  2. Little dog with his head bobbing up and down.

Tell you one that I have never seen done that would be cool would be a little May West with lights on the ends of her rockets.

  7. Off to the driveway, I'll look him up this afternoon when it raining pitch forks and dawgs. I think you could both benifit from the meeting.

Getting back to it I have seen some of the older fellas with a replica of their car that lite up when the brakes were applied.

but if you want to be totally traditional the little dog is the way to go. My wife wants me to do that and little dingle balls around the glass.

  10. The little dawg in the back window has been around forever. More popular with the low rider guys por fin but it was being done clear back in the '50s by custom guys.

Any accessory stoplight from the 30s-40s-50s. There are many fine looking stoplamps from those years.
The alternative would be a line of LEDs across the bottom of the window opening which would be virtually invisible unless lit up. Probably the most effective thing to do too.

Agreed, they're a bit too newtech from the taste perspective but I figure not having one in today's traffic on a treasured car you've got serious time & $$$s invested in is right up there with rolling on sub-standard suspension, brakes, and tires. ...and wtf, some cars actually came stock with them back then, for instance late forties Dodges & Plymouths.

It all depends on your definition of sub-standard. In their day no doubt the Caddy's chassis was right up there, ...state of the art. But today, particularly on a rig that heavy, pretty antiquated, ...especially if you've upgraded the power & lowered the vehicle. I define sub-standard as: anything less than the best I can afford to install on my budget. My apologies if I offended, that was not my intent.

No offense taken, you just made it sound like if I had stock suspension, drum brakes, and bias ply tires, then i had junk and was dangerous. I do run the stock suspension (with new bushings, pins, ect), stock drums (with new shoes and turned drums), and bias ply tires(I think they are the only good looking wide whites). My car came from the factory that way, has been well maintained, and rides just fine for a 57 year old car. Sure I could upgrade to disc brakes and a mustang II clip, and radials, but to be honest that takes a lot of the fun out of it for me. There was nothing wrong with the stock setup then and nothing wrong with it now. I would honestly choose my stock chassis setup over most of the scary frame swaps people have hacked together. Im not trying to start shit or pick a fight, Im just asking that you dont put down my stock chassis because you dont like drums brakes and bias ply tires.

  26. I know that someone is going to take offense at this but I think that a 3rd brake light is way over rated. If you want one by all means run one but think about it, they have been around a long time, everyone os accustomed to seeing them and if they are not paying attention I doubt it will make any difference in the world.

I used to ride to school in a 65 Falcon that had a 4" red brake, turn light on each side of the package tray, and he STILL got nailed by a Caddy! This was 1971,way before cell phones.
    Still a good idea though.

its worth a shot, everybody is driving with there head in there ass . i wont have a car with out some kind of 3rd lite, and try to brighten up the tail lites on any car you put together. most of these lites that are out of the 30s 40s and 50s suck.you need to make an attempt to get people to wake up. whether it looks kool or not.

  29. I plan to rob a single row LED light out of a late model for my '50 Fleetline. Not worried if it's traditional or not. Should be unobtrusive when not lit and bright and in your face when it is.

As for the dog thing, it's been around so long that when AMT tooled up the '57 Ford kit, the original custom interior included one. They retooled the interior with some ugly modern seats for the custom version though, so I'm not sure if it's still in there. Originally it had diamond-pleat tuck 'n' roll on 4 kitchen-type buckets with a matching console.

How about making sure your regular brake lights are bright enough and big enough? That would increase your safety more than just adding another light. Most folks have it engrained in them to watch taillights, not your window.

If you absolutely have to have that extra light, try to find something vintage to make a light out of, rather than going out and buying the next great Chi-Com P.O.S.
