Our '56 F250 steering box has a bit of slop and I'm thinking about rebuilding it.
I've been looking at our box and the kits available.
They make a kit with a long steering shaft (with worm gear attached). The rod is long, going from the box to the steering wheel (through the column) and steering wheel attaches to the other end.
Our box has a short shaft with a rag joint attached right at the steering box to provide for a later model steering column.
Was there a short shaft box available on the 56 F250?

  2. Sounds like it's been modified. Should be integral with the column. F250 box is the same as an F100.
Post a pic of the box/column under the hood

Here are some photos. The box is a 3CC03.

  4. That is the factory F100/250 steering box, someone cut down the shaft to fit a different column.
All of the standard repair/rebuild parts will work except the steering shaft will need to be cut down again or buy the worm gear separate and use your short shaft.

When you pull it apart show us how the shaft was addressed to work with rag joint. CD109445-96E5-478A-B4AD-C473DBE340CD.png

    Will do.
Quick question, is the worm gear pressed onto the main shaft, and is it splined?
    Thank you

I only know from reading is that it’s a press fit. I’m just curious because I do know that the shaft is hollow.

  8. Yes they are splined and pressed on with a very tight interference fit.

Heres how the rag joint was adapted to the shaft.

A few hand scraped splines, and a shallow clamp bolt groove. You are lucky the thing didn’t swerve all over the road.

I doubt they wore it out that bad, it must have been a junk box that they did all that work to and then it never did drive good.
