As always a huge thanks for all the help I get here ! I am building a '49 Ford Coupe, and pulled the stuck engine and sold it.. long gone.. I have installed another good Flathead and almost have it running, thanks to help from here. It is a 6V Positive Ground. The engine I have now is supposed to be a 1953, but I want to confirm it. From looking at pictures and on the internet, it appears that the '49-'52 cars had the battery located on the drivers side, and the 1953 cars switched to the passenger side. The engine I bought had the starter solenoid located on the passenger side bolted to the motor, just below the coil. I am moving it to the drivers side now so my new 6V cables will fit properly. So am I correct that my engine is probably a 1953? Also any other ways to identify it. Thanks much,
49 to 53 8ba motors are pretty much the same except for some bolt on stuff like carbs, water pumps, fan etc
The solenoid isn't in a stock location. What heads are on it? 8ba, 8rt, or EAB? EAB would be of the later vintage but no guarantee the heads are original to the engine?
If it doesn’t have separate valve seats it’s probably a 52-53ish. Ford stopped using inserted seats late in flathead production, but I’m not sure the date.
Vanpelts has some ID info that may help http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-90to125late.htm
Better pictures of the pan, pumps etc. will help id what you have, or need ,to install it in your '49.
Thanks for the replies. I have it installed already, and getting read to fire it up. Just was curious..
