Hello Fellow Rodders: I need your help with three questions, all pertain to the pic below: 1. Can someone tell me what these headlights are from? 2. What is the round sheet metal stamping called that I assume serves as the seat for a sealed beam headlight? I call them headlight buckets but that does not seem correct. 3. Where might i be able to buy two such buckets or whatever they are called? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Michael
The part in the bottom pic is what the sealed beam unit fits into, don't know what the proper name for it is. As for the headlight buckets--do you see any kind of tag or stamping at the top close to where the trim ring attaches? I'm thinking a big luxury GM car, Cadillac/LaSalle or maybe Buick or Olds. Guide was/is part of GM and made all headlight assemblies for the GM lineup, so if it says Guide anywhere on it, that puts it in the GM family. But there were others big luxury cars, like Chrysler, that used a big deep bullet-shaped bucket, as well as other big cars that I am less familiar with. Couple of things might help narrow it down: Is the mounting stud hollow so the wires are routed through it (as it is on Fords) or does the wiring come out through a separate hole? Take a pic of the bottom side where the headlight stand fits into the bottom of the bucket--that might help narrow it down.
I think @squirrel is on a camping trip so it might take a bit longer to get an ID. Unless of course it's a Dodge then @VANDENPLAS will verify.
Might want to carefully look over the entire outside of the housing, and see if you can find some identification stamped into it somewhere....that is usually a big step forward in identification. The headlight bucket is usually called the headlight bucket, but the fun thing is that you have sealed beam type headlight buckets that were modified to fit a headlight that was originally not a sealed beam, and it's gonna continue to be hokey if you try to replace them with something similar. Sealed beams came along in 1940, those housings are from the late 30s, is my best guess.
37-38 chevy's mount with 4 studs stickin out the side. that bucket looks to me as about a 37 38 mopar product. Agree with Squirrel, the base for the sealed beam was not part of the original bucket
Thanks to all. The mounting side is shown below. Solid mounting stud Am away from the unit but best I can remember no markings of any kind. Clearly the HAMB & its BB members are true rodders - always willing to share their expertise. Genuinely appreciated - Michael
https://www.ebay.com/itm/155318977604 these claim to be 37 Chevy, and look like what you have. The 38 version uses the 4 studs to hold it on.
Thanks @squirrel for the link, learned somthin new there. I believe they should be marked "Guide" on the back end of the bucket. Guy wants 450 for rusted out incomplete buckets...not sure thats gonna happen !
If in doubt, contact Don Axlerod, at, hdlthqtrs@aol.com. Don specializes in headlights, and he will identify the buckets for you.
these are 37 chevy. one year bucket only, also shown are the mounting brackets, made to fit the rad surround and the bucket. again, 1 year only.
