Alright fellas, I've scratched my head on this one long enough. I bought my A Tudor in 2000. This axle was under it when I bought it, and was so grungy I didn't even know it was chrome. A little chrome polish, a few hours of work, and some gloss black paint cleaned it up nicely. Its been sitting in the garage ever since then and collected a little oil and dust since then. The previous owner indicated the axle had been under the car since '68 but I have no way to know for sure. (Those brakes were not on it when I bought the car, that was my trip down the wrong road about 2001 with Speedway.) So, anyone have an idea what this axle might be? Can you measure the distance between the spring perches? It looks like a 37-41 axle with a special long spring to move it over the axle. Neal
I can tomorrow, its in garage number 2 about 10 miles away. Thanks for the insight, you.may be on to something. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
I agree that it looks 37 up. Measure the axle height where the bones attach at the perch bosses. 37-up is 2.25". 32-36 is 2" Some of it is too new to date to 68 IMO, so maybe it was upgraded since 68
Bat wing to bat wing, on center, is 38 5/8". Mounting surface at the bat wing top to bottom is 2 1/2". Kingpin to kingpin center (top) is 47 3/8".
I have a similarly spaced axle (aftermarket) and it is for 37-41, as the guys mentioned. If you look at the fifth one down in this picture, that is your axle undropped. Don
Thanks for all the input on this folks. How do I measure how much drop there is? I'd suspect, being a supposedly older axle, its no more than 3". Are there any ways to tell who may have dropped it? Dago axles had hammer marks? Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Thanks for all the help guys. I had been saving the axle for my '30 Sport Coupe, but decided to run it on my '27 T Roadster. I think it'll look perfect sitting in front of my A grill shell (spring behind) hung by split '48 bones! Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Why not keep the spring on top, better hot rod look with the dropped axle. Maybe turn the axle around to hide the old shock mount, if the other side cleans up OK.
I like that look too, but wanted to try the "spring behind" look this time around. I really like the clean look of just an axle out in front of a painted A shell. I'll post some "inspiration" pics on the build thread. You know the things you do that crack you up later? I had a GREAT '41 Tudor a few years ago that had saggy springs so it looked lowered. Good running flatty too. I really wanted to split the bones and run a dropped axle, just never wanted to spend the money to do it. Turns out I had almost everything I needed sitting on shelves. :banghead: Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
I just measured my son's '37 axle. Using a strait edge, I measured from the tops of the king pin bosses down to the center top of the axle and it measures 4.5". The amount of drop on yours would be the difference between your measurement and mine at 4.5". Because the spring perch boss is moved out toward the king pins there is limited room to drop those axles very much.
Whadja say Neal? Nothing came through and I always appreciate your insight! Thanks MEB, I'll check it out.
