Hey everyone, new guy here. Recently picked up a 53 gmc 9300 from my uncle. Trucks been in my family it's whole life but had seen better days so I've decided to be the one to bring her back to life. Trying to figure out what's in it. My uncle said 261.. It only has 2 valve cover bolts so I'm ***uming he's wrong. I've searched and searched but can't find the answer so I'm making a post. It's a Canadian truck and the engine serial on the flat spot behind the dipstick is c654597.. I can't find any information that will tell me what that is. Could someone please help me out?

I am away for work right now but I'm going to task the ol lady with grabbing some pictures tonight to send to me and I'll post them up. I didn't think to take any before I left because I didn't think identifying it would be this difficult... Lesson learned haha.

If it were a GMC engine it would probably have the displacement stamped on the block, such as 228, 248, or 270 or whatever.

From what I've read, the Canadian GMC is 216 Chev powered, & there MAY even be a Canada/export 224" version. Can't make out the model # under the GMC emblem - is it 9100 ?

Canadian Chev trucks had Chev engines, GMCs had GMC engines. The 261 had a squared off valve cover with bolts around the edge.

It's definitely not a 261, it has the two bolts through the middle of the valve cover like the 216. I had thought the Canadian gmc's came with Chev motors. If it's gmc I guess it would be a 228 then? I'll have some pictures of it tonight and once I'm home from work in a week and a half I'll have to start cleaning it up and getting some other numbers off it.

Any Chev 6 '37 - '62 can be fitted with the same 2 bolt rocker cover.
The driver's side block is a quick way to ID - 5 freeze plugs in a GMC, 2 in a Chev.

and if it's a 216, it will have the side cover (over the pushrods) extend all the way up the valve cover. GMCs and 235s and 261s it doesn't cover the head.

If it is a GMC the displacement is stamped next to the distributor hold down, as the first three numbers in the serial number.
