I realize how goofy this sounds BUT... I have a 54 Buick Special w/ original 264 Nailhead ( stock carb).. Last weekend it developed a bit of a stalling problem at idle. So 1st thing I did was brought up the idle a little and VIOLA! suddenly the fuel guage works!!!! WTF, it never did before Any idea why this would happen other than this is just another mysterious reason old cars are so cool?
I've got a '54 Special with 264 and stock carb. (Actually, I swapped to a '54 4bbl, but was running the 2bbl for a long while). As you know, the starter circuit wiring runs through that pod on the base of the carb, so unlike other cars, the carb is actually part of the electrical circuit on these. But I can't think of any reason anything would cause a change, unless maybe it has something to do with the grounds--maybe you bumped a ground or something, and now a circuit is completed? Wierd. -Brad
Sounds like a grounding issue to me also, or you just got really lucky that the coinsedence fell in your favor. It works now and thats what matters.
That kind of makes sense....and is a lot better than my answer which I think was "Gnomes and gremlins" or some such thing.
