My Dad bought a new 49’ Ford when he was working his way thru college. Things got tight so he sold the Ford in 51’ to pay tuition. Bought a running driving 40’ Studebaker business coupe for $20. Bought four tires, the parts for a tune up and brake job, and a gallon of enamel from the “color mixed wrong” shelf at the paint store. Swears he was into the entire deal for just under $100. and two weekends labor.

Drove it 75 miles each way to school every week for two years. Sold it for $100.

Maybe so, but I just love that scale and wonder if those promotion models are still around.

Mid to late 1960s, I used to grab my dad's Sunday paper classified section and pour over the two or three whole columns of 1932 Fords for sale. Most of them were $1,000, $1,500, $2,000. Saw one for $3,000... ooh, that must be a good one.

So, if you got into the time machine and went back to buy which ever (and as many) cars you wanted (don't forget you need the currency they had back then, that might cost a fortune these days), what would you do with them then? You couldn't bring them back in the time machine with you. You would have to figure out a place to store them that would still be a safe place to keep them, and keep them in pristine condition, all the years between then and now. You could rescue them until tomorrow. You would also have to be concerned about someone having a barn find (or old building find) 20 years ago, that would have been your stash. Or worst yet, find out someone scrapped the old cars for the WWII war effort!

^^^^ Just build a bigger time machine! About a 4 car ought to be enough.

Figure that when that car was for sale at that price a lot of guys who would be interested in it were making .75 to 1.00 an hour. That would be like a high school kid today looking at a 4875 buck used car.
I paid 175.00 for my 51 Mercury in 1963 and had guys tell me that I paid too much.

Some of you are way too constrained by reality.

Could someone drop me off in 1977? There's a girl I would like to see again.

You would need to have gold for currency. The big problem is you would need to buy it at todays prices and bring it back in time with you. Making the cars more expensive. You could also pay you’re grandpa or dad to take care of them for you in you’re custom built home/garage high on a hill.

Over thinking things. I bet you could buy a pair of pantyhose for 2 bucks a pop on Amazon. Buy say a 1000/2000 pair. Take them back with you and sell them for 50 cents a pair. Should net enough to buy a few cars. Pantyhose ( as I recall and the type ladies wear today) weren’t invented until the 50’s. Saw it in a movie. Has to be true;).

See ??? Here's the flaw in the 'time machine' idea.
You would fall in love all over again back there, and never come home......

A few wagers on some sporting events of the day should net you a nifty profit.
(This sounds familiar, like I saw it in a movie)

Don't need a time machine if you're old enough to recall bargain prices! I bought my '40 Chev coupe in 1968 for $50 and drove it home. Straight as could be, and primered out, ready for paint. A year later I bought a '53 Chevy 2dr Hdtp. with a 371 Olds, and beautiful custom rolled and pleat interior from a coworker at the Cadillac dealership for $50 also. He said it wouldn't start, and I discovered a broken wire to the points, and it fired right up.
Bought a '55 Chevy 150 2dr. sdn. with 235, and 4 speed on the floor a year later in the Nickel ads for $120. It was a great runner, and guy needed money to buy a 3 speed his buddy had. Then a couple year later I bought the big price tag truck! A 1957 Suburban with a 389 Pontiac, and TH400 for $350. Beautiful straight, great running truck!
Wish I'd had good sense to keep them all. Sold all, except the '55 that got stolen and never found.

We were in the fifth grade at the time; she died in a house fire with two brothers and a sister. If I could have just one wish...

  21. reminds me of this video:

they were practically giving these away. Of course that's in England and those things aren't really desireable but still. It hurts to see those being scrapped. (in another video they were being scrapped not this one)

Good point. If you pulled out a credit card in 1935, they would just look at you funny.

Former Father in law bought a 55 Chevy in Panama when in the Air Force. Rear end crapped the bed. Was packed full of bananas. Probably got 50 miles out of it that way.

There's no need to go so far back, look at the price of some cars just 10/15 years ago and see now the price they fetch. Comes to mind early Porsche 911, Mercedes 190SL.
There's plenty of stuff to bring back if someone was to travel back in time : Tiffany lights, gold, guitars, gun, first gen Apple computer...
Or you could take back in time almost any grocery getter and win every race you enter.

  26. My '50 Chevy IS a time machine.
'Specially when I'm driving on one of the local Farm-to-Market country roads with the windows rolled down, suckin' on a cold 8-ounce little Joe bottle of Coca-Cola while headed for one or another of the live music venues down the way.
Sometimes the drive is the whole point of the exercise.
I might get me a pair of engineer boots and roll a big cuff on my jeans next time.

I’m wondering if we’re all dreaming of the same girl? She’s probably 220 lbs got whiskers on her chin and been on Jerry Springer six times!
